I wanted to fix some errors (inability to read from LBA) found on my
HDD (system partition) by a third-party product , but after scheduling
the task to run the command "chkdsk C: /F" at next system start, there
was no action. Also, I get the information "cannot open volume for direct
access" when choosing "error checking|check now" and checking the
check boxes "automatically fix file system error" and "scan for an
attempt recovery of bad sectors ".

Also, I have to mention that the feature Safe mode in
my Windows XP Pro SP 2 doesn't work. It lists some driver names which
are loaded and doesn't do anything.

Could you help me solve this?

Click on start=>run, key in cmd and OK.

    From the cmd prompt
    chkdsk c: /f
and when it gives you the dialog about needing exclusive access to the drive,
answer Y and then exit the cmd window and reboot.

Newt, the problem is that chkdsk C: /f doesn't run after restarting the computer. As mentioned, a similar command can be run by pressing "check now" available when right clicking on a partition and choosing tools|error-checking. Then I get the info that the partition will be checked at next system start, but it is not, because of this "cannot open volume for direct
    access ".

That happens at times and is rarely a good sign.

I suggest you make a current backup of any personal data (address book, stored emails, documents, pictures, etc.) just in case of problems and then boot to the XP CD recovery console and run chkdsk /r on all drives/partitions. Since you will be booted from the CD, all your hard drives should be available for scan & repair. Take a look Here for a good how-to on getting to and using the recovery console.
