Error caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c

I saw a few other posts about this virus but they were for different operating systems, so I figured the fix would be different. I'm sorry if I overlooked a post that would have helped.. but.. I've got the blue screen background taking over my desktop with a message saying "Error caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c
*System can not function in normal mode. Please check security settings.
*Scan your PC with any available antivirus/spyware remover program to fix the problem. "

There's also a Norton AntiVirus pop up alert that says it has detected a virus.

Any help would be greatly appreciated because I have no idea how to get rid of this thing.

 

Before you do the removal's suggested by TonyT, download smitRem.zip. It may Save As Attachment.Php, rename it to smitRem.zip, and unzip it to the desktop. Reboot into Safe Mode, and doubleclick RunThis.Bat. It will do a good cleanup on this.
When done, go to Start\Run, type in "SFC /SCANNOW" and press Enter, have your XP CD handy as you are going to be prompted for it. Then reboot into Normal.

Open HJT, click on 'Open the misc tools section', click on 'Delete a file on reboot', a File Open window will appear. Copy/paste the following into it.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe

Click on Open, and you will be prompted to reboot, select No at this time. Do the same for this one.

C:\Documents and Settings\Jackie\Application Data\srbe.exe

Find the file "system.exe" and do the same for it, it may be in C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32

Then remove what TonyT suggests, in addition to these.

When done, reboot, and then delete this folder.

I followed Tony's instructions before the second reply. I followed everything it said but the virus is still here. I tried to follow Mark's suggestions but it didn't work either. When I ran RunThis it began to run and then gave me a bunch of lines saying something like "The system can't find the specified file." Nothing would run when I put in the "SFC /SCANNOW ". I followed the rest of the instructions and after deleting everything and rebooting, the computer said that windows couldn't find the spoolsrv32.exe file. Hopefully you have more suggestions?

Without it, you could be re-infected with many other things within minutes of connecting to the internet. The infected wininet.dll may be replaced with an updated version from SP1a too. If not, once everything else is taken care of, you'll need to install Service Pack 2, which I know contains an updated version and should replace it. We'll do the necessary checks and fixes for it if needed when the time comes.

Create and post a new HijackThis log after installing SP1a.

PS. The smitfraud targets files from several variants of the infection and the "The system can't find the specified file." message you saw is a good thing.

I really see no other choice than to buy a Full Install copy of XP.

The spoolsvr32 message comes about because there is a startup for it, but take my word you do not want that file back.
