My computer is Dell 435T 64-bit Windows 7 Home premium 12gb ram and 1tb Hd.

Network: ATT; DSL Modem Alcatel Home (Speed Touch).

The problem came up yesterday when I received a fax. I opened by BVRP phone tools to receive the fax. But Windows scan and fax software came up to receive the fax. I also used the windows software to send a fax. After that the Broadband stopped working. I got help from ATT to set up the broadband bypassing the Linksys router. But I couldn't get the internet to work after I connected the broadband through the router. On other two computers in the house the wireless is working fine. When I try to set up the broadband on the main computer I get the error message 651.

My Yahoo Messenger troubleshot the problem and gave the following notes in its error log. I hope this will help someone to diagnose the problem:

When I tried to set up the internet connection, I got the message that I was already on the internet; except I can't browse.

    I would appreciate any help.

Try the suggestions in the link.

    http://social.answers.microsoft.com...k/thread/d1daeb34-f960-42ad-919b-960cd64399b4

There seems to be a lot of people having this error 651 pop up and it would appear that this is a bug in Windows 7 that did not occur in previous windows versions. I have seen a huge number of solutions suggested but this thread was the most up to date that I could find. Hope this will help or someone else here may like to suggest something.

The fix which replaces this file,“raspppoe.sys" with one from windows vista is mentioned many times but hasn't proved to be successful for everyone. I think this relates more to a PPPoE connections.

This link contains all the solutions I have seen in one place followed by a long thread of posts.

    http://ghost301tech.wordpress.com/2...indows-7-a-killer-for-internet-connectionvpn/

Looks like this is a Windows 7 problem and there does not appear to be an official fix at the moment.

Hopefully one of the possible fixes will help you.

The internet connections works ok when I bypass the router, but when I use the linksys router then I can't access it; yet the computer says I am connected to the internet. That's where the mystery is. That's why I am not resetting tcp/ip or change the file raspppoe.sys etc.

I removed BVRP classic phone tools and Virtual Box from the computer, disabled the network adapter and modem and enabled (or reinstalled them), but I couldn't rename raspppoe.sys file because it is protected by Trusted Installer (I couldn't find a way of getting around it). So I am still stuck with the error message "651 the modem reported an error. "

This may be the trick to edit the PPPoE file.

This is copied from a solution I found. Bad grammer and spelling but seems to make sense of the problem.

If this all fails I don't know what else to add as I have been worn to the ground trying to find one definitive solution. If you do figure out a way please put the solution in a post here se we can all use it to help anyone else who gets stuck with irritating problem.

Maybe Microsoft will provide a fix in the near future.

Best of luck sorting it out:)

I got some paid tech help from ATTConnect and they troubleshooted and said that something was wrong with my router. So I purchased another one and set it up. It seems to be working fine. Now I have to connect other computers to it.

    Thanks, Markmadras for your help.

    This case is resolved now.
