I have a friend that is getting error 630 when she tries to connect. I don't remember the exact modem, but it's a US Robotics win modem. It's set up for software, no init strings and worked one minute and not the next. Another friend had initially installed the modem and had problems with it at first, but eventually got it working. Any ideas? Do you reckon it's the modem itself or maybe a problem with the software? This is an older computer running Win 98. I don't even think it's a pentium. Any help would be appreciated.

I forgot to mention that I reset the modem and tried diagnostics and got the message couldn't open port.

    Hi MoonPie,

Error 630 is Computer is not recieving a responce from the modem. You can try this link it has trouble shooting instructions for error 630 as the modem listed might not match the modem installed.
    http://support.earthlink.net/mu/1/psc/img/walkthroughs/windows_9x_nt/dialers/dun_1.3/5281.psc.html

If this does not work may I suggest powering down the system , removeing the modem card and powering the sytem back up. Power down again and reinstall the modem card and boot back up.

This might help the system to see the modem so that it can once again can attempt to install by detecting new hardware. Hope this helps..

    Regards,
