Hi: Attempting to install a licensed copy of Office XP on a recently formatted XP home machine. Halfway through the install it stops with this error.

Error 1304. Error writing to the file File name and location. Verify that you have access to that directory

Have been to the Microsoft site and the failure has to do with the CD rom drive cacheing but all of the articles apply to either 95 or 98. This may be a hardware issue but maybe there is something else I am missing.

    Appreciate any help

Thanks: This is a friends machine and I will not get to it for a day or so. Will try copy to a directory. The disk was clean, not sure what could out of whack with the Cd rom config but will check the mfg site.
    Thanks

Something you might want to try with the CD is to wet the surface and put a little dab of toothpaste on and use a tissue to rub the surface then rinse with warm water. Does a nice job of cleaning and doesn't harm the media.
