Resolved Error 0x8DDD0002 with ie8

    I have recently upgraded to ie8 and have noted the following. If I run Microsoft Update from the link in my start menu it works fine. However if I just open ie8 and then try and run windows update from within the tools menu it brings up the error 0x8DDD002 which indicates that I do not have administrator status (which I have and it makes no difference if I log on as Administrator). I have also found that if I open ie8 by right clicking on it's desktop icon or even iexplore.exe and then using "run as" by entering either my own password or the Administrator password, then it will run Windows Update from within the tools menu with no error. I have tried many of the suggestions found on the web including those of Microsoft but with no success.
    Has anyone any ideas as to why this should happen?

    You should try resetting IE's advanced settings: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Restore advanced settings.

    Hi dpurser. See if shutting down all background programs that are running in the system tray makes any difference with IE. Have you tried running IE with no add-ons? (Start< All Programs< Accessories< System Tools< Internet Explorer No-Addons) Does the Microsoft update website work now when you try to access it from the tools menu?

    Try resetting the permission on the softwaredistribution folder:

    1. Open windows explorer, locate the \windows\softwaredistribution folder.
    2. Right-click on the folder, choose Properties, select the Security tab.
    3. Make sure Administrators and System have full control.
    4. Click on the Advanced button and put a check mark in Replace permissions entries on all child objects......
    5. Select the Owner tab, select Administrators and check Replace owner on subcontainers and objects
    6. Press OK & confirm to close the file properties.
    7. Restart your computer.
    8. Make sure that the Automatic Updates and BITS services are started. If they are not started, start them (you can check from Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services).
    9. Retry WU

    Note: In Windows XP Home you must boot into safe mode and login as administrator and then perform the above steps.

    Try running sfc /scannow, maybe that'll clear things up?

    Just tried that but it made no difference. Is there a way to see if SFC changed any of the files?

    Look in Event Viewer - between SFC start/finish - screenshot .....

    I had looked there. There is no reference to SFC at all.

    You are looking for Windows File Protection in the source column - it it is absent System File Checker did not run.

    Stupid of me. Yes Windows File Protection does show starting and stopping but with no entries in between.

    Problem Solved.
    It was my Online Armor firewall which loaded Internet Explorer in Safe Mode when opened normally. Running Windows or Microsoft Update from the desktop link must somehow bypass this safe mode. Thanks for your help.
