Check Event Viewer to get a detailed description about the error.

Usually it's related to a driver or application (update drivers a first step).

Thank you for your reply. Where do you find Event Viewer?

Click on the Start icon and type Event Viewer in the Search box.

I have now a similar error in that Hard drive K is no longer recognised after unplug/plug in with a cold start. External drive K indicator light appears to be lit. This drive showed a caption repeatedly it required formatting before it could be used. Procedure was carried out before current error.
Drive is 1Tb capacity, powered through the USB connection to a powered Hub and barely one year since purchase.
    OS is Windows 7 64bits.

Start testing your hardware (hard drives; PSU is where I'd start).

I replaced the HD with a new 2Tb HD and it too fails to be recognised. Several programs are now failing to function ie Paragon System 11 backup utility.

As Arie has suggested test your hard drive - i.e. the drive in the computer with the OS installed - using the disk manufacturer's disk diagnostic software (DOS version from a bootable CD) .....

    Disk Diagnostic Software ....

    ExcelStore

    Hitachi/IBM

    Samsung

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum

    Western Digital

    Toshiba

If you don't know the make of the drive download Speccy which will give you that information - use the piriform.com download link.

I tried your suggestion and tried Speccy that checked registry. It Found 285 errors and solved 25 for free. I have two programs CCleaner and Auslogic Bootspeed who are supposed to carry out this task. Many members have noted that this type of program can be very damaging to the registry.

Speccy does NOT check the Registry - it simply gives you info re. your system hardware (screenshot) so I've no idea what you downloaded or ran.

Sounds like you might have installed some of the cr@pware that comes with most of Piriform's products... You have to be really careful with freeware...

Speccy - downloaded Registry Options, requires registering at £29. I erased software.

Personally, I'm not afraid of using CCleaner's reg cleaner, but I would be cautious about using more than one reg cleaner on the same machine. I learned that the hard way.

EDIT: Just to add to what masterroming said, CCleaner has a builds page, and you can download the slim version with no toolbar.
