    Problem:
After installing NS7 I opened NS4.77 mail, and accidentally chose to set NS4.77 as default e-mail program. I then opened NS7, and reselected it as the default mail program. I would like it to be the default for all mail purposes.

However, clicking a MailTo: link now has mixed results:
If I am in NS7 viewing a web page, then it opens NS7 mail.
If I am in Word, it opens NS4.77 mail.
If I try it in Opera, it asks me if I want to set up a mail account.

    Observations:
The SendTo: function works fine, and brings up NS7.
If I uncheck "Use NS mail as default mail program ", exit and then restart NS7 it does ask me if I want to make it the default, and when checked it stays selected.
Under My Computer | View | Folder Options | File Types there is no URL:MailTo Protocol. Should there be?

I noted in a thread earlier this month that somone was having the reverse problem (MailTo working OK, but Send To not working). Checking some Registry settings was suggested there - but playing with the registry is one hack that I have deliberately never tried.

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Jeffrey

    Welcome to the Forum, jeffreyclarke!

    Hi Jeffrey,

You obviously have been following the Netscape 7 Newsgroup:
    snews://secnews.netscape.com:563/3D72CC35.7040200@houseofellithorpe.com

The Mailto: Sendto: functions don't work for some. Others, like you, find that one works but the other does not.

Other than the two Registry Hacks, and those don't always work either, so there is nothing else to recommend. The "sendto" and "sendmail" protocols have been disabled by Netscape, as have the "mailto" protoco.

Yes, I do have the URL:MailTo Protocol in Registered File Types. This is what it shows for the Application to handle the file type:
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\NETSCAPE\COMMUNICATOR\PROGRAM\NETSCAPE.EXE -h "%1 "

Actually, I had not been following that particular thread, but a similar one. It was helpful to see the Regedit files in the thread you referenced. I checked my registry entries, and they all seemed OK.

I was about to give up, when for some reason I went in to the Control Panel and decided to unselect Netscape 7 as my e-mail app. I selected Outlook, exited, then went back in and selected Netscape 7. - Voila! Mailto: now works perfectly!

    Thanks for your help

Excellent Jeffrey! You might want to share that with the Newsgroup as well. Not everyone likes hacking the Registry.
