    [Resolved] Erratic actions lately

My computer has been running erratic the last couple of weeks. When I go to close websites down sometimes they will close quickly and other times they seem to hang before closing. The same is true when I go to shut down the computer, and sometimes I will get a message saying "Closing program "

I am posting my "Hijack This" Log & my Deckard's System Scanner log, per Aries instructions under the "Read this before posting" article.
Will someone be kind enough to take a look at them and see if anything wrong shows.

    Hi Paul,

You might want to try disabling the NVIDIA Display Driver Service. It's not essential to operation and has been known to cause problems.

Have you checked the event viewer for any clues?

Did the behavior start after installing a new piece of software or update? Comodo? Ad-Aware? Counterspy? Windows Update?

C:\Program Files\Logitech\SetPoint\SetPoint.exe has also been known to cause some slowdowns/application hangs. Description: Keyboard and mouse drivers and utilities for Logitech's latest products - supersedes iTouch and MouseWare on their older products. Required if you use special features such as multimedia keys It can be disabled via msconfg or fixing the following entry with HijackThis.

    O4 - Global Startup: Logitech SetPoint.lnk = ?

How did you get 16,898 entries in your HOSTS file? Are they legitimate entries?

    Hi Noah,

Thanks for responding. Let me answer your questions step by step.

1-You might want to try disabling the NVIDIA Display Driver Service. It's not essential to operation and has been known to cause problems.----Tell me how to disable it and I'll be glad to do it.

2-Have you checked the event viewer for any clues?---I'm not sure what to look for in the event viewer but there are some warnings and errors that show many, many times.

Under the "APPLICATION" tab I have these 2 WARNINGS that show up repeatedly.

    Warning--Source column--Userenv
    Category column--None
    Event column--1517
    User column--SYSTEM
    Computer column--PAUL1R3N

    Warning--Source column--Userenv
    Category column--None
    Event column--1524
    User column--PAUL

3--C:\Program Files\Logitech\SetPoint\SetPoint.exe has also been known to cause some slowdowns/application hangs.

I'm not really sure but it may have started when I got a new Logitech diNovo cordless keyboard and a Logitech MX Revolution Cordless mouse. They wouldn't install of the CD they sent with the package and I had to call their tech support and the lady told me they were having problems and walked me thru the install.

That is the "Ending program" I always see when shutting down the computer-- "Ending Setpoint Exe" comes up with a screen with "blue running blocks" ending the program (not sure if I described that right).
I tried shutting down some of the Setpoint stuff that I could see (using the autoruns exe) program that I have installed and was able to get rid of some of the stuff--but when I end certain features I lose some of the Mouse capabilities.

If there is a way can disable more of the setpoint, please let me know.

I don't understand what you mean by--

    O4 - Global Startup: Logitech SetPoint.lnk = ?

4--How did you get 16,898 entries in your HOSTS file? Are they legitimate entries?
I got them using the MVPS Host File I found out about on this forum--been getting Updates for a long time and in fact I have one now ready to install but it came after I sent the Hijack This log and I didn't want to add anything else. How did you get 16,898 entries in your HOSTS file? Are they legitimate entries?

Click Start>Run and type services.msc then hit enter. Locate the NVIDIA Display Driver Service and double click the entry to open it's properties dialog. Click Stop, then set the Startup Type to Disabled and click OK.

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entry then click Fix Checked.

    O4 - Global Startup: Logitech SetPoint.lnk = ?

Close HijackThis and reboot. Let me know if things are any better.

    Noah,

Did as you suggested. I lost some of the mouse functions at first but after I reset the mouse functions it is working fine.
The web pages definitely close faster than before and when I shut the computer down I do not get that -- "Closing Setpoint exe" message.
Computer seems to be running fine now.

One other question--at the beginning of this category it was mention to use "ATF-Cleaner.exe to clear the computer. Is it a better way than using "Disc Clean-up?

Thank you for your help and time.

    Paul

For the areas targeted, yes it's more thorough.

Happy to hear things are working properly again. Glad I could help.

Noah--said things are working fine too quick---I didn't realize when I told you I lost the mouse functions and then reset them and they worked fine that I would lose them everytime I shut off the computer.
When I fire the computer up now I have to reset the mouse to get all the functions to work--Is there a way to reinstall that Setpoint I removed with the "HiJack This ". I tried checking the boxes in the "Autorun.exe" program I have installed but that didn't work.

Open HijackThis to the Misc Tools section, click Backups then select the setpoint entry and click Restore.

What model keyboard do you have?

Then you have the Setpoint 4.00 software?

Reboot after restoring that entry with HijackThis. You may need to reset your keys one more time, then it should remain set. Does the erratic behavior return?

Both the keyboard and the mouse have their own chargers. I set the mouse in the charger whenever I not using it and the keyboard I recharge about once a week. I can check the status of the batteries in each by opening the "Mouse & Keyboard" setting from the taskbar icon.

I just checked the updates and there's nothing available. I usually get a notice every so often from Logitech asking me if I want to check for updates, that why it's current now.

I reset the Setpoint with the HiJack This and the mouse now keeps all of it's functions after I shut down and start up again and for some strange reason I don't see the "Setpoint.exe is closing down" notice when I shut it off.

Noah let me work with the computer for another day and see how things go and I'll let you know.

Once again thanks for you help.

If it continues to give you trouble, try disabling the automatic update function.

I was actually thinking to disable it to see if the update process itself might be causing problems. ;)
