Encoutering Problem [IE has encoutered a problem]

I keep getting this message when using Internet Explorer, IE has encoutered a problem and must shut down. This happens at random times. It may work 4 or 5 minutes or 4 seconds. I have run Ad-Aware, and Norton no change. Any help with this problem greatly appreciated.
    WinXP Pro, IE6

I have moved your thread to the Removing Spyware and Viruses forum as an HJT log has been posted.

Please download the latest version of HJT, save it to a folder on your hard drive - not to the desktop or a temporary location, run it and post a new log.

Hijackthis log looks clean, The PCTools / SpyWare doctor site guard is being misread as no file by hijackthis, but that is normal.

Try going to tools/ manage add ons in IE and disable them one at a time (or disable them all and add back one at a time) to see if one of them is causing a problem.

Sorry I didnt get back sooner. I did what oshwyn's said. I disabled them 1 at a time. Same thing. This morning, I updated Ad-Aware and Spybot. When I opened Spybot I got this message, Application has changed since it was created. Since Spybot-S&D does not change itself, we recommend you check your system for malware and viruses instantly. I updated them, and ran them both. Also Norton. Here is the hijack this file.

Have you run System File Checker yet - as suggested in the thread Charles pointed you to?

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow noting the space before the forward slash and have your XP CD handy. System File Checker will run and exit without any closing dialogue. To see which files, if any have been replaced look in Event Viewer.

    I do see one oddity.,
It would appear that your usrobotics modem driver utility is running twice.
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\USRmlnkA.exe

I only see one startup entry for it, so it is really rather hard to see why it is running twice; but I doubt that is your IE problem.
As I said, your log looks clean.

Because of your spybot message you may want to run these to make sure you do not have any infestations hiding somewhere that hijackthis does not check. (I suspect it was caused by unchecking the add ons in IE though)

    A Squared trojan remover
Download, install, update, scan and fix.
Then, please download Ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.

    1. Install Ewido security suite
    2. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    * Install background guard
    * Install scan via context menu
    3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
    4. The program will now open to the main screen.
    5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found! ". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
    6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
    * On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    * Then click on Start Update.
    7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful ")

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
    Ewido manual updates

But I think Pete_C is correct and your problem lies elsewhere.

I ran System File Checker at the start of this problem. I ran it again this evening.AS oshwyn5 said, I installed A Squared. Updated it, and ran it. Am going to download and run Ewido tonight. With a dialup connection it takes awhile to do anything. Will get back to you when I have done this.

I downloaded, updated, and ran ewido. Used the computer for most of yesterday. I thought that had fixed the problem. Went online this morning, to thank everyone for their great help. Then this morning, it did it twice. "IE has encoutered a problem and must shut down. "

    PCTools spyware doctor.

It is normal for some of these malware prevention tools to show as no name ./ no file. They do this deliberately to prevent malware from recognizing and disabling them.
So this should not be anything to be concerned about.

I would use the manage addons option to see if disabling them helps.
