i am not able to open any emails recieved with an attachment as an eml. also any files that i had saved on disk no longer open either. The icon for those saved files have also changed, i am getting a message that their is no file association with this file, i have tried to create one through Mycomputer, and file types....but no luck, what happened?? I am quite certain this is something real simple that i am just overlooking

Perhaps you need to repair or reinstall Outlook Express. It is the normal program associated with the EML extension.

If it's already installed properly and operational otherwise, try changing the association to it.

    Good luck.

    Your file association for .eml files has changed. You need to change it back. The following explains how to configure Windows 98 to open .eml extension attachments;

    1. Click Start, Settings, Folder Options, File Types

    2. Scroll down until you find Outlook Express Mail message and double click it.

    3. Double click 'open'.

    4. In the "Application used to perform this action" box enter the following command:

    "C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /eml:%1

Click OK to close the window.

    HTH. :)

Perhaps you need to set the options to allow emails with attachments to be opened from within OE>toolbar> "TooLs ">options>Security tab>uncheck the Do not allow attachments to be saved.... yada yada.

Also have you actually opened and setup a default mail program and an account?

Is this program selected as the email program from within IE's Program tab settings?

What happens when you drag one of these *.eml to the inbox of OE?

==Another way to register this with OE=====
(I'm not familar with Incredimail so this post is aimed towards OE)
*Hold down the keyboard "Shift" key and right click on the *.eml
*Use the option of "open with" and scroll to and select "msimn "
*Make sure the "Always use this program etc.." box is checked

Thanks for your swift reply goddez, The first few suggestions had already been tried with no luck at all, but when I drag and drop into the "Inbox" Ta Da they open, thanks for the tip but being a curious person, why is this happening because they have opened with a double click for years?

QUOTE: "Why is this happening? "

ANSWER: She says, with her best stoic look of wisdom, "I dunno'! "

I suggested the DragNDrop as an alternative way of determining if this was a problem with the saved *.eml files or perhaps OE or OE's inbox its self. Since they all seem to work...

Have you closed OE and reopened after making the association change? Rebooted? I know this shouldn't need to be done for the association to stick but, as we all know, Windows seems to want to do things in it's own way on occasion for some unknown reason...Gremlins?

The only other thing I can suggest is an IE OE repair or reinstall. This would indicate that the registry is missing some additional registry keys that integrate with the *.eml, mail protocols, or "shell open" values and pointers. The email keys all have subkeys that point to other keys and so on and so on.....
    For example:
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.eml]
@= "Microsoft Internet Mail Message "
    "Content Type "= "message/rfc822 "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Microsoft Internet Mail Message\shell\open\command]
    @= "\ "C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\\MSIMN.EXE\" /eml:%1 "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mht]
    @= "mhtmlfile "
    "Content Type "= "message/rfc822 "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mhtml]
    @= "mhtmlfile "
    "Content Type "= "message/rfc822 "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.nws]
@= "Microsoft Internet News Message "
    "Content Type "= "message/rfc822 "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Microsoft Internet News Message\shell\open\command]
    @= "\ "C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\\MSIMN.EXE\" /nws:%1 "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\message/rfc822]
    "CLSID "= "{3050F3D9-98B5-11CF-BB82-00AA00BDCE0B} "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{3050F3D9-98B5-11CF-BB82-00AA00BDCE0B}\InProcServer32]
    @= "C:\\WIN98\\SYSTEM\\MSHTML.DLL "
    "ThreadingModel "= "Apartment "

Maybe a past virus, of the mail worm type, took out some of these keys or modified some defaults. (At least I hope it's in the category of "PAST ". Have you scanned lately?

A registry repair may help.....Tweakui's "repair tab" could offer a fix or two that may be useful......

The surest way is an IE OE repair, though these alternative could-do's may do the trick:

    Hkeys to check:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;277015

I hope this helps and please keep in touch with your progress.
