I emailed an MP3 file to a person recently and it was received as a TMP file. I tried sending other files to him and all were received with filenames like ATT177.TMP, ATT178.TMP, etc. When he changes the extension to MP3 the file plays normally. How is the filename being changed and what is the source of this change, the sending or receiving computer? I'm sending via Outlook 2000 and he also has Outlook 2000.

When the friend opens the mail, does the attachment show the tmp extension?

What happens when they save the file to their desktop?

Yes, it shows up as a TMP file, but has the same filesize and composition as the original. Only the filename/extension has changed. By simply changing the extension to MP3 he can open the file normally.

This email had a BCC list of six people, one of which being the problem recipient, and I called three of the others, none of whom had a problem with the filename. So this problem occurs with one person and apparently only with MP3 files.

I sent him more MP3's, all with the same result, but TXT and WAV files all transferred without changes.

What is that particular recipient's mail agent? Some web based mail services may do that kind of tricks.

    It's a POP3 account from Cox.

Does it happen with any other type of files, or just mp3?
Can you ask him to pick up mp3 file through some other mail agent, like Outlook Express? This way we'll see, if it's something about Cox, or some settings on his computer.
