If I have "Show an Alert" and "Play a sound" checked under Tools/Options/General Tab, shouldn't I get the little envelope as in Messenger if I am using the Firefox browser?

A friend who switched the same time I did says she still gets the envelope as a visual sign. I do hear the sound but there are times when I leave the PC and don't hear the sound but there is no visual sign.

    Thanks.

    Pat,

I think you're talking about Thunderbird. When you enable show an alert, and play a sound, then you need to click on the "Advanced" tab, and select a sound file from your HD.

You should see an envelope in the system tray with a green down arrow, when you have mail.

Try disabling the setting, close TB, and then reopen
Now reset the show an alert, and play a sound, close TB and then reopen.

Send yourself an email to test the alerts.

Yes, I know it should show up in TB but when I have the browser open and am NOT viewing my mailbox at the time I never see the envelope. I simply NEVER see the envelope. As I said I do hear the audible alert but never see the visual alert. The audible one actually says " You have mail.

I will try what you said though and uncheck it, close down and try again. I thought it was there at one time but with all the new things going on I just now missed it.

    Thanks. I'll let you know.

    Ramona,

No wonder I am going nuts. I unchecked both boxes.

I closed down TB. Re-opened and sent a couple of test messages. Received no alerts and no sounds. I now have only the sound box checked and I get both the alert and the sound alert.

Now if that isn't confusing I wonder what is. I'm just leaving it the way it is. I suppose I even have TB confused.

    Thanks.

    Pat,

That is very eerie, and perhaps your Vista has been invaded by Gremlins? Did you try using your own sound file, using the Advanced tab?

I don't want any program to bug me with audible messages (I was with AOL for several years), but I don't mind a visual reminder, although, I usually pay no attention to it. I don't even know if any of the settings are default or not, I see no hear. At one time, I thought it was cute to use my own sounds, but I don't have clue what I did with them, so that takes care of it. Who knows what lurks in the background?

    Ramona,

I've always used my own sounds. I hate the ones that Microsoft supplies.

At least I know I am supposed to have it and will just mess around with the on off thing if I want it that bad. And I do.

    Thanks.

    Pat ...

It may work differently in Vista (although I don't know why it should), but in XP, even if "Show an alert" and "Play a sound" are both unchecked, you should get the envelope with the green down-arrow at the left end of the System Tray.

"Show an alert" only causes a message window telling you that you have a new message to pop up from the right end of the Systray. Because it lasts for less than five seconds, I consider it useless, and don't use it. I much prefer the audible alert because, even if I'm in the next room, I know that I've received some more spam. :)

Re the Shadow, he was just one of the many radio characters who kept us glued to the radio "way back when ". Who can forget Captain Midnight and the Secret Squadron (who else sent away for a decoder ring?), or Jack Armstrong, the all-American boy?

    Jim,

Thanks for the lesson. I did not know that the "Show an alert" pertained to the pop up. I don't need that. But for some reason I wasn't getting the envelope.
I do like the audio alert for the same reason you do.

And I also remember the Shadow, Sam Spade, Gangbusters. I sure miss the Lone Ranger. <G>

    Thanks for the lesson.
