I got an email yesterday which I am treating as a con until told otherwise.

It comes from "Elvis Lloyd" and has a yahoo email address which is just alphabetic characters.
It is offering software like Windows XP Pro for $50 and Office XP for $60 and many more attractive offers on a website.

There is no address or location mentioned, so I am guessing it might be someone collecting credit card details.

Does anyone know anything about this?

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is too good to be true.

Besides, you should never react to SPAM email.

I have to agree with Arie. Mail like this is good for one thing only. To make sure your delete function is still working in your email client. ;)

A bit like this thread from a few days ago.
May be legit. Still waiting for someone to take the plunge though, and it won't be me! ;)

    Cheap software

I think the consensus has it.....it is extremely unlikely to be legit.

Thanks for the help with that!

If you are lucky, they will take your money and give you counterfeit software.

If you are not so lucky, they will take your money and give you nothing.

If you are even more unlucky, they will use your credit card to run up charges you never intended.

It is quite likely they are selling OEM software acquired in suspicious circumstances.

When we buy new machines at work, (mostly Dell and Compaq) they come with spare discs we dont use, Works, OEM versions of Office, Windows XP etc (we change them all to Win 2K). We have volume licensing so dont need these discs and most of them need validating on the MS website at first use anyway.

Unscrupulous IT staff at some companies will take these discs, peel off the XP licence sticker from the box and sell them on as unregistered software.

It is all unregistered of course and you may not be using them illegally - although I am not sure about this and anyone is welcome to offer a different opnion, but the companies that originally bought the machines are now unwittingly using them without licences, and they are probably the ones breaking the law.

Hope this helps and I would welcome any further opinions

I get about 5 of them every week, and have been told that this is the biggest internet schem going at the moment. Almost 100% Guarantee you will do your Money
Try to visualise this. Small operator receiving orders from around the world sending out packages of software in what would be enormous quantities. Can’t do.
But let the money roll in "Can doâ€
One thing that gets me with a lot of the genuine Junk Mail that I receive mainly from the US is stuff that is for customers in the US and Canada only. I have a "au" Australia on my e-mail address so why do they mail out material for orders in US and Canada only.
