eductaion/puzzle game

Hi im looking for this old game i used to play as a kid. It was basically you playing against this old man or a scientist or something and you would play this board game against him. you would move pieces around like in chess but you could also change the landscape of the game, like from earth to water or something like that. i don't remeber all of the details but before you could face him you had to complete a series of puzzles and games leading up to him or that it was after you made a few moves. i played it on win 95 but i think it was compatible with more than that. if anyone could point me in the right direction (i know its not the incredible machine btw) i would really appreciate it, such an awesome game. once again im not completely sure about all the details but i know that it was you playing against a man in a board game and it also involved puzzles. thanks
