HI, I started a new job and the XP PC assigned to me does not have some of the programs I like to use when I right click and then click on new. I know there is a way to add and delete programs to this menu, I just can't seem to remember how. Any one have a fast link to directions, so I can move on to doing all the other things one has to do when they start a new job?

Thanks,

Dmack

Here's what I have from earlier trips into that area:

When you right-click on the desktop and select New, a list of default templates you can open up are listed.
To remove items from that list:

Start Regedit
Search for the string ShellNew
This should bring you to HKey_Classes_Root
For the items you want to remove, simply rename the ShellNew command string (eg, right click the word Command, select Rename, and place a Z in front of the existing).
Renaming is safer that deleting and easily reversable.
If there is no Command string on any item, do not alter anything else. The program affected will be listed in the Command string, Be sure you have the one you want.
Continue searching for the items you want to remove by pressing F3
Do not go beyond the HKey_Classes_Root area.
You do not need to reboot for the change to take effect

If all that is too much for you, you can use TweakUi to do the dirty work. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

That all works for removing items but for adding things, you'll need to use a context menu editor. I have used ConTextEdit for that before with some degree of success.

EDIT: I think this may be your lucky day! I just noticed that TweakUI also can create those items! You'll find it on the Tweak menu at "My Computer" > "Templates. "

The initial link I posted above for the TweakUI source was for the wrong version. I have corrected it.
