Greetings all. New to the forum, old NS user. Been using NS 4.78 and IE 6 :)( ) and had trouble with 4.78. Just DL'ed NS 7.01, read alot about customizing it but!... Like Microsoft, AOL, which I believe owns Netscape now, has to put stuff in that they ASSUME people want. I miss the old large Home button.

Question: Is there any way to put it back on??, also, I have removed the AIM stuff from the Chrome files but still show the bookmark symble and the AIM letters on one of the menu bars. If I want AIM, i'll install it, why do they feel the need to force it on us?? Anyways, I'm sure customizing 7.01 is better then the old ones, but I'm looking at going back to 4.78 or just using IE (gag gag)...

Thanks all, look forward for the time being, reading the posts.

    Welcome to the Forum, Basstracker!

    Hi Basstracker,

I agree that Netscape bloats their browser, and a 32 MB program is beyond ridiculous. There are options, however. Two young men have given us CCK Versions of Netscape, and using the "Custom" install option, you can option not to have AIM, media players, etc. You might want to take a look at these Versions before you give up on Netscape:

    SillyDog701 Streamline and Standalone Versions

    Netscape 7.01 Compact

    Here is your Home Button

If you decide to give one of these versions a try, take a look at these Clean Install Guidelines.

Let us know if we can be of further help.

Thanks, how bout one for mail? lol !

Ok, I wont push it. Thanks alot. I can handle PC hardware but software gets to me sometimes.. One more question if you dont mind. In order to do this custom install, is it possible to re-do the install on top of it now or should I uninstall NS? Due to hard drive space, had to dump 4.78. I do have the full installer saved.

Again, thanks for the help and the links!

    Hi Basstracker,

I understand the HD space considerations. You should definitely uninstall what you have now, if you are planning on installing one of the trimmed down versions.

Use the Control Panel|Add/Remove applet to uninstall your current version.

After uninstalling, it is very important to reboot the PC so files can be updated. This is really a good time to do a thorough Scan Disk and Defrag. If you don't do this often, this will take a long time, but it will get you performance enhancement.

If you've already uninstalled 4.78, I hope you saved your Users folder, so you won't lose any of your User Preferences, especially Mail, Address Book, and Bookmarks.

Feel free to post back with more questions.

Yes, I do have backups, both from the windows section and where NS is installed, although I gather the one that is under the Windows folder is the key one. I looked at your page for clean installs, yet last night I also found a site which tells you during the install process to do an Alt + Tab, open windows explorer, and edit a file that becomes available during the install process. I just forgot what file they talked about, do you know what this is about?? I'll say good nite after this post. Thanks

    Hi Basstracker,
Absolutely, as that is your Profile (Preferences).

I believe you are referring to web pages explaining how to edit your Netscape Communicator Install files:
    http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/nsinstallnoaim.html#noaim
    http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns47xlite.html#47xlite

If so, they definitely do not apply to Netscape 7.01. Netscape 7 and Communicator are two totally different programs, and 7.01 is definitely not an upgrade to Communicator. It is a new program from the ground up, and will be in development for some time to come.

    Nighty night, ;)

    Ramona
