    Hello all!

I use to burn copies of my documents and other data to CDs as a backup in case of the inevitable ......

However, when I copy from the CDs to a HardDrive, the file attribute has been changed to "Read Only ". This is annoying since a lot of my applications need to write to the files.

I haven´t been able to find a way to prevent this.
Anyone out there who knows how to?

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

There is a long explanation of the problem and various workarounds...the most effective (but still somewhat limited) being the use of xcopy in DOS...on this page.

Windows 98 does not, unfortunately, have a provision for changing the attributes of files within folders and sub-folders merely by changing the attributes of the folder.

It will let you do a batch conversion by opening the folder, selecting all files (Ctl/A) and unchecking the "Read Only" box...which will change the attributes of all the files selected.

Just found a freeware utility that says it will do the batch conversions for you. An explanation of the program and a link to download it is here.

    Christer Hi

With windows me I see no need for any third party programs
we can select all within a folder R/click , properties and choose
    archive, read only or hidden
when changing we're prompted to apply changes to the selected items only or apply changes to the selected items, sub folders and files

    But you know this ?
Im just butting in here to learn, dont mind me

    Miz Hi
Win 98 cannot do this ?

Oops....I didn't read Christer's signature so I missed the part about ME which does have a batch conversion feature.

Nope, 98 doesn't have the ability to change all subfolders and files with one click. See? MS did make a change for the better with ME. ;)

    Hi guys,
    thanks for Your replies!

I know of the possibility to change the attributes for all files within a folder but since my memory is teflon coated I tend to forget ...... :( ...... and if files are copied to an existing folder, it may contain files which SHOULD have the Read Only attribute.

I have copied files via a temp folder to change the attributes within that one before sending the files to their final destination but it´s cumbersome.

It´s interesting to learn (from Miz' first link) that it´s Windows who´s the culprit and not the recording software.
I wonder if XP shows the same behaviour and if it offers the same possibility as ME to change the attributes?

    Regards,
    Christer

I just came to think of zipping the files before burning to CD. Maintaining the original search path would make it possible to unzip to the original location without any trouble and I wouldn´t think that the file attributes get altered!?

    Christer Hi
You can tell I don't burn allot of CD's , in two years maybe two,
Don't have allot to back up, so application backups for us is not really necessary----BUT, One day I would like to back up everything including windows. first using OEM's restore disks
updating OS and OEM's apps ,, install our favorite apps and then backup ..
IF I remember correctly that would be about 11gigs, do you know of a free backup utility.?
    or anyone in windows BBS?

Get back to you're idea, so how would you save the original path other that maybe putting a txt file in that zip , a reminder of where they go ,when made, seems like some backup utility would do this.
I suppose Win-zip would do that? I see all the tools to do so but have not tinkered enough yet.
I should know already know this. DU

    Regards
    Lonny

    Hi Lonny!

Neither do I burn a lot of CDs but when I do I´d like it to be easy and the thing about altering file attributes has been a real pain. It took quite some time before I realized that when an application delivered an error message when it couldn´t write to a file, it was the fact that the file had been on a CD and then put back that was the problem.
These files are not really backups but they are transfered between a LapTop and my home PC since I work on both.

When selecting files to add to a zip-file (in WinZip), a square can be ticked to include the full path info. Any file that has been added to the zip-file with that square ticked must be extracted to the root of the drive. WinZip finds the appropriate folder and if the file which you´d like to replace is still there, you´ll be asked if it should be replaced.
I have tested it adding files from different folders and then extracting the lot and it works.
Of course, files can be added from only one drive/partition since they´ll be extracted to the root of the drive/partition. Also, it only works to extract the files to the original PC or another PC with exactly the same folder structure. If, on a different PC, the folder structure shouldn´t be the same, WinZip will create the folders. I found that out while testing.

About backing up the full system, well, I´m not the person to ask. I use Norton Ghost for that purpose and I think the SEK600 (USD70) is good investment. It saves a lot of time and depending on how high you value yourself, the investment is returned the first time you DON`T have to do a full re-install!

I hope someone else has some tips on freeware.

    Regards,
    Christer

    Edited:

11 GB seems an awful lot. Currently on WinME I´ve got 2.7 GB and i expect my WinXP installation with the same applications to stay below 4 GB.
