    Netscape 7, Win98.
    At random times, but rather pretty often, e-mail password window pops up. I put my password in, checkmark it for Password Manager to remember, click OK, but it keeps popping up.
    What's going on?
    It just started last night, for no reason.

    I think, I found a solution, thanks to Ramona here:
    http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns62mailpswd.html#mpw
    For, who knows why, reason, I had these two lines:
    user_pref( "mail.pop_password ", "xxxxx ");
    user_pref( "mail.pop_name ", "Your_UserName_Here ");
    missing from PREFS.JS file.
    I added them, restarted Netscape, and for last 20 mins, no pop-ups.
    Now, I pray...LOL

    Just to confirm.
    It's been almost 2 hours, now. NO MORE POP-UPS.

    Things got even stranger.
    I opened Netscape this morning, and e-mail password pop-up was acting again. Surely enough, I opened "prefs.js ", and those two lines mentioned in my earlier post were missing again. They disappeared by themselves, overnight. I put them back there again, and a problem is gone for now.
    Now, I'm totally clueless.

    broni,

    Just a shot in the dark, I do not have and never had the lines mentioned so I do not know where or why.

    Aside from this, you may be able to "back door" this by placing the corrective entries in your user.js file not your prefs.js file.

    I would first check under Edit->preferences .....Privacy-> manage passwords:

    and delete any that look like they may refer to you email accounts.

    Shut Down NS.

    Re-start and try and access email, enter Password, Select remember,
    and see what happens.

    This is just my opinion, I could be wrong.

    regards:

    broni,

    Did you shut down your computer for the night? After making the corrections in your prefs.js file, did you save the changes? If you forgot and then shut down the system, it would come back. That's the only thing I can think of right now.

    OK
    1. I'm not sure, if I had these:
    user_pref( "mail.pop_password ", "xxxxx ");
    user_pref( "mail.pop_name ", "Your_UserName_Here ");
    in prefs.js before, either.
    I found that advice at:
    http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns62mailpswd.html#mpw
    2. I deleted my mail entry in Password Manager, and restarted. It didn't help.
    3. Yes, I shutdown my computer for the night, and "yes ", I saved changes...
    AND
    things got even worse a while ago.
    I put those two lines into prefs.js, saved, removed entry in Password Manager, restarted, and pop-up is back.
    I wonder, if it may have something to do with my ISP. Last night, and today, on couple of occasion, when trying to pickup mail, I had brief errors about problems with mail server connection. It was gone on second or third try. Maybe server glitch?

    Broni, I run Adelphia cable and my system does the exact same thing periodically.

    It's always their problem and not mine. The first time it happened I went through the whole system looking for the answer. It wasn't to be found. It rarely lasts over a couple hours but it has happened so many times I don't pay any attention now. It always says that my password was refused and requests that I reenter it. When I do that, it asks again, over and over.

    If it persists for an extended time, I'd call them and chew them out but since it's of short duration, I just accept it. Your own experience may require different action.

    :)

    This is what I started to suspect (AT&T). Especially, when I recently noticed, that it's totaly random. Two hours ago, it kept popping up every few minutes, then slowed down, and for last hour it just happened once.
    I also recalled, that it happened once in the past, but I wasn't able to remember, if I found any solution, or it just quit doing that.
    Thanks.

    I to have experienced this same erratic pattern. I have NOT been able to eliminate it, I have been able to reduce it considerable. I kept increases my time cycle for "Check for new messages ". Not knowing WHAT was failing in the check mail cycle, just reducing request cycles has helped. From checking every 5 minutes to every 20 minutes has reduced it to one event every 200 hours on net.

    I'm not sure about it. I had it set for a long time to just 1 min, and everything was fine. Last night, when problem started, I edited "prefs.js" AND set time to 10 mins. I thought, I fixed it, since pop-ups stopped. So, I went back to 1 min, and STILL, NO POP-UPS for the rest of the night. Today around 4PM problem was back. I applied exact same fix, and it DIDN'T make any difference. Still pop-ups. Every few minutes. Then it slowed down, without me doing anything, and as of now, I didn't have any for last 2 hours. And I'm back to 1 min check. Because of all these, I strongly believe now, it's ISP. Server glitch, maintenance, etc.
    In my case, it may have something to do with AT&T going Comcast. Maybe they've been switching some settings.
    I keep my fingers crossed...LOL

    Couple more things pointing toward ISP.
    Since last night picking up my mail gets pretty slow (cable) from time to time. Sometimes after some heavy laboring, one more error message comes up:
    "The PASS command did not succeed. Mail server mail.attbi.com responded: mail storage service unavailable, wait a few minutes and try again." Whatever PASS means.
    I click OK, password window pops-up, I enter my password, OK, and mail comes in.

    I think we both are in agreement... just looking at it differently. The dynamics of the entire network are bound to flip a 0 into a 1 in error. All of us have received corrupted downloads, even though they were handled by error corrected transfers. We have no control over mismanaged ISP's, high data spikes, bad line or weather condtions. When your email client handshakes with your ISP, these conditions come into play. My use of reducing cycles does not correct short time problems, it is a long term strategy.
    PS... Real time update.......................
    This is the second time I re-type and posted this same post. I sent the first post at 11:00 pm CST. BUT BBS. data base burped when I "Submitted the message" and lost the post. (Arnie, you should be able to verify, the error screen said it would notify you). Like I said, it's just one of them things you can reduce, but difficult to eliminate.

    broni,

    You are probably exacerbating your problems with your 1 minute setting. The time frame for checking messages shouldn't be reduced to less than 5 minutes. That isn't written in stone, but has been proven to be pretty much the standard for most ISP's.

    You know well, that I love you for your huge knowledge, and persistence with solving problems, and I know, that you love me, as well, for those "twisted" problems, and me being as well persistent as you....but....
    I have to disagree on this issue...LOL
    I had that "1 min check" set for months, with no issue. I have another, web-based account, with Netscape set for 1 min, with no problems whatsoever.
    Since 4PM today, I didn't touch a single setting, and...'till 5PM, or so, pop-up was on, then couple of times, for next two hours...from then...nothing.
    Maybe it's me, but I can't see any pattern, or connection. Gee...Clint Eastwood from "Blood Work" would be welcomed here.....LOL

    Interesting

    I have followed this thread with interest because it so closely matches my own experience. Let me introduce my theory. I think that it is both ISP and Netscape at fault. When Netscape encounters a problem connecting to email I believe it deletes the login information. So what happened to Broni would be explained. Broni entered the new password everything worked fine==near the end of her online session Netscape checked email failed and deleted her login info==Broni shut down==next morning by magic login info is gone. Can anyone think of a way to test this theory? If it is true can we make Netscape retain the login info?

    Hi iamnotanumber

    I agree totally. It's program interaction between email client software / ISP software held hostage by the dynamics of maintaing a perfect communication bridge. I assume Netscape could create a more forgiving handshake, better code to manage mail downloads. But for whose ISP running which server software under what conditions managed by how well of a trained staff providing access to how many users demanding what level's of service (shisss, say that it one breath). Moving targets can be hit, it's just expensive. I feel as "the WEB" matures... User's will be able to buy/pay for a variety of service level's. The one overall constant... Netscape, ISP's and user's all have a budget.

    As of today, I was 99.999% positive about "iamnotanumber" theory.
    This is what happenned since my last post 2 days ago. I didn't make even a single change to my settings since then.
    Yesterday pop-ups stayed around moderate numbers during the day, then later on a frequency went up.
    Today...no single pop-up.
    But, (I think, I'm not able to make any "straight" post, as Ramona knows...LOL), last night, before I turned my computer off, I did some cleaning (temps, etc.), and ran RegClean.
    So I'm unsure again...LOL

    Dead End?

    Netscape must time out waiting for some email reply from the ISP. Unless we can tweak those settings I don't see a solution to this problem. Noone who has this level of knowledge seems to listening to our pleas.
