gpc--If you have local friends using the same ISP and/or email provider, are they getting the same message? Looks like an email server is down.
This usually clears up fairly quickly depending on your provider. You could also phone them.

If you are certain your internet connection is okay (you can access web sites, for example), open Outlook Express, go to Tools>Accounts, double click on the account that's giving the timeout message, go to the Advanced tab.

Increase the timeout time to the max...on mine, it's 5 minutes. Click OK. If it still times out after 5 minutes, I think it's pretty certain the problem is on the other end. The problems can range from the email server is down, somebody at the ISP canceled the wrong account (it happens) or your account got canceled for some reason.

Miz--As you know, email servers and ISP servers are not always the same, even if the same ISP is involved. From time to time my email is down, but net access is fine.
I am hoping to hear that gpc's problem just "cleared up" with time.
Fortunately my similar problems always have.
Nothing I could do but wait (and call the ISP).

I was only trying to tactfully suggest that gpc make sure the computer is online when trying to get email. I've had several customers call with the same problem only to discover that their connection had failed.

    gpc--
    Same email provider??
If this is something new, and the problem still has not cleared up or the other suggestions have not helped, you have lost the connection to your email provider. The simplest solution is to phone the provider and request help to reestablish the connection.
Tell them about the "other user ".
Or you could try to reestablish the connection yourself using OE Tools|Accounts|Properties|copy the settings on the various tabs and then click Remove. (The settings on the General and Servers tabs are especially important. If they are incomplete, you may need the email provider to tell you what to enter. Or if the other user uses the same provider, you may get some input from the other user's settings.) Go back to Tools|Accounts|Properties, but this time click Add and follow the Wizard's instructions.

I can only tell you what I'd try (in the order I'd try it):

First, set up a completely new account in Outlook Express that is identical to the one getting the timeout. Using that newly set up account, see if you can get your email. If that works, just delete the old, non-functioning account.

    If that didn't work....

Second, if you have an anti-virus program running and it has an email-scanning feature, disable that temporarily and see if things work. If so, you'll at least have identified the culprit.

    If that didn't work....

Third, download and install the free version of Mailwasher. Get it set up to acces your email account and use it to look at the messages on the server. It may be that there's a huge attachment on one or a corrupt message or something else out of the ordinary clogging up the works. Mailwasher will allow you to delete messages while they are still on the server which might be necessary to get rid of whatever's holding things up.

    If that didn't work....

Fourth, if all else fails, call the owner of the email server (probably your ISP) and ask them to clean out your mailbox. You'll lose everything in it but that will surely get rid of any message or messages that create problems.
