The bold type is missing completely? - not just the fact that the text is no longer bolded?

If you are reading messages sent as HTML as text you will see no formatting of the message so try ....

Tools > Options > Read and uncheck 'Read all messages in plain text'.

"Read all messages in plain text" was not checked.

I have been using Outlook Express for many years, and confess I never noticed a change in font in either the list of messages or in the message itself regardless whether I have read the message or not. And my "'Read all messages in plain text" box is unchecked.
The only difference in messages that I have read versus those I have not is the envelope icon to the left of the message in the message list. The former is closed; the latter is opened.

Sorry, Sand Crab - I have just re-read your post and see that I missed the point completely the first time around :(

You are right - unread messages may be optionally in bold (From, Subject, Received, etc) with, as Jim points out, a closed (yellow) envelope to the left. Read messages are not bolded and the envelope is open.
    Check out this setting ....

Tools > Options > Read - 'Mark message read after x secs' - if this is checked the unread messages will lose the bold after the default of 5 secs. I have this box unchecked to clearly identify which messages are unread and, on reading the message click on the Mark Read icon in the icon bar (this may be a tool bar customisation I made) - otherwise Edit > Mark as Read.

Jim - you must be using the default for this option which I am fairly certain is checked.

PeteC--Yes, 'Mark message read after x secs' is checked and x=5, but I still never see anything but bold text, and the envelope stays closed until I open the message. Maybe this is because I have OE running all the time, but minimized until I want to use it or I am notified by an icon in the Notification area when I get new mail. Perhaps, the 5 seconds starts when the message is delivered even though OE is minimized.
But even so the text is bold.
No big deal. Just never thought about a font difference before.

I do not have Bold letters at any time unless I select Edit = Mark as unread.
Cannot find Tools-Options-READ-'Mark Message after X secs. Old age dosn't help very much. 77 yrs.
