I was on my computer the other day playing a computer game and listening to cds on my e drive. Everything was fine untill today. My friend had gotten a new cd and wanted to listen to it on my computer. Then as we put the cd in nothing happened. It usually just pops right up. So then I went to click on my computer so that i could click on the e drive for the cd to play. But when I clicked on my computer all I saw was c and d drive and A floppy drive. Did my E drive get deleted! I have no idea what has happened so If somebody could please help me I would really appreciate it!!! Thanks!! -Amanda-

Hello Amanda,

Right click on My Computer > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager > expand DVD/CD ROM drives.

Is E listed? If so, is there a yellow warning symbol next to it?

Picking up on one of ghemant's suggestions, right click My Computer > manage > Disk Management. Is E listed there?

Have you tried to play the CD on D? If not, don't, not until we get some resolution to E's problem. But, do try a CD that you've used before and try that in D.

Regards - Charles

Just a thought here. Being that the drive disappeared after trying to play the music cd, I wonder if this could be a possible issue with Sony's rootkit software? I know that if you try to remove the rootkit and don't do it properly you will lose your cdrom drive in explorer. If that's the case, I could see it also being a problem if something went wrong with the installation of the rootkit.

Go to the following link and see if the cd you tried to play is one of those in the list. If it is, there's also a link to another page where you can download an uninstaller for it. It might not hurt to try that.

Also, have you tried running system restore? Maybe that would get things back to normal.

Edit:
I should also add, if you try system restore be sure to select a restore point that was created before you tried to play the cd.

Hi Zander,

Had the same thought in the back of my mind that this might be Sony's rootkit, which is why the advice about not trying that cd in the other ROM drive. In my reading about the rootkit's effects, deleting a drive wasn't one of them though. Of course, always a first time

I saw this thread last night and hesitated to say anything about it for this very reason. But I know you'll lose the drive if you try to remove the rootkit and don't do it correctly. So, as I stated before, it's doesn't take too much of a stretch of the imagination to see something like this happening if the thing doesn't install correctly for some reason or other. No, I haven't seen anything like this related to the installtion of the kit, but............ :)

when I went to the device manager and clicked on the drives one of them was called secondary IDF Channel and it had a yellow circle with an exclimation point in it. Does that have anything to do with the yellow warning symbol?

Hi Amanda,

Does that have anything to do with the yellow warning symbol?
Yes, that's what I meant.

Try a simple fix first: right click the drive in DM > uninstall. Then shut the system down, reboot. What this will do is allow XP to re detect the drive and we'll see what the result is.

If this doesn't work, then try Zander's suggestion of going back to a restore point just prior (a day) to this problem.

BTW, is this CD that you tried to play by Sony?

Regards - Charles
