From a websearch I see DWL-120 relates to a D-Link wireless adapter, correct?

If so, some things you can try are to look in Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs for an uninstaller and run that before you try installing new drivers. Have you identified it correctly, I see there is a DWL-120+.You can try uinstalling when you have booted into Safe Mode.

It appears to be a USB connected device, so you may have to have to follow instructions as to when you connect it during installation.

You will probably need to remove/uninstall any currently installed drivers, including those for any closely related hardware.

I expect the D-Link website would be the best place to try to find drivers or information about installing the adapter.

If it is a USB connected device, consider that it may be a problem with the USB Controller (driver).

I don't have a "DWL-120" or know what it is, so you may have to give us the details.

    You are correct

:confused:Unfortunatly other than to provide the driver, D-link no longer supports the usb wireless adapter. I did as you indicated with each of the drivers I downloaded. I suspect the driver may have a problem with win xp based on a discussion I had a long time ago with a d-link engineer. I was hoping someone here had a magic solution.

    procedure

:( I have tried about everything. The procedure from D-link is simple you just run autorun then select install drivers. There the situation seems to get more complex in that in every case the driver is not recognized by the hardare. I went inot the device manager and tried to update the driver and it does not see a driver. I tried rebooting with the engipment plugged in and disconnected. Not sure where to go from here.

Let's make sure, you did proceed as follows...
Download zipped file from my link.
Unzip it. You'll see several folders. One of them is XP folder.
Go to Device Manager, and uninstall whatever D-Link driver is present now.
Right click on D-Link device, and click "Update Driver ".
    Update wizard opens.
Point the wizard to XP folder in freshly unzipped download.

your site provides the wrong version

 The dlink drivers are very version specific. My version is a d-link dwl-120 model D. I am pretty sure that I folowed exactly your procedure at least once but I will try it again with a 120 d driver. Part of the problem with the d-link site driver is it does not let you know where it puts the driver when it installs it so you can manually do th hardware uninstall and instal. The system does however in several of the cases I tried find the driver and try to install then gets this error. It does tell me that it has not been certified for compatibility before getting the error.

I believe so, it was when disconnected.

I don't know why bad equipment would give me a bad inf file error but that may just be me. Anyway I am pretty sure it is not a bad addapter.
    :(
