My system resources start up at a varied rate of 65 to 80% & quickly dwindle to 45 to 58 %, forcing me to constantly need to alt-ctrl-del/explorer/cancel/end task-style refresh, wich works faster than logging off & on & quickly boosts S.R., but hafta do it alot. Any tips or things to delete, or things on my start-up menu I can close that I won't need?

    Hi LikaLaruku,

If I remember correctly, there is no difference between performance if SR is at 100% or 10% - to actually affect you, it would have to get to zero. I do remember that the system will pop up with messages about disabling running programs towards the low point, but as long as it remains above zero, you're ok.

In other words, if the low point is 40% - 45%, then the performance is no worse than if it were at 80%. This is one of the issues that I was happy to get away from when I went to XP.

    Regards - Charles

When my SR hits below 45% it tends to rapidly drop to 4 or 2% for no apparent reason. My wall paper does some akward stuff as a giveaway. I wonder if my video cards has something to do with it, I really need to replace it.....

About this wallpaper. Would this happen to be a JPG file? and you had to enable Active Desktop to use it?
Active Desktop is a notorious bad resource hog, and you should disable it.
But I bet you would like that JPG file on the desktop, too. Get Ifranview to open it and Save it as a BMP file, then put it in the Desktop.

Or just use Paint! It's built in.

If you have to constantly reduce bog or boost resources by ending current tasks on running programs.

    Once again:

    Reduce startups:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=39425

You may have a leaky/buggy program. Try to pinpoint which program may be the source by using a process of elimination. This task may be made easier using msconfig. If this is a software issue, seek patches, updates, workarounds or consider not using the application and uninstalling it.

Have you done your update to-dos win98, IE/OE directx, your own sound, graphics adapter etc. etc.? Check for 3rd party software updates?

    >A good housecleaning cleanup, maintenance routine run through.
    >Optimize seek= reduce win98 "bells and whistles ", use the most popular tweaks such as the increase of shelliconcache, folders, etc.
    >Use trio of adaware, spybot, hijackthis combined with on-line scan. (Microsofts scanner is very good at catching critters).

I know the above just skimmed the surface of this topic and suggestions were general rather than specific but...

The windowsbbs archives of "past posts" are chalked full of links, advice and resource tshooting techniques and experiences. I think some of our members are just a bit burned out on this issue, I know I personally am. I am just taking a little needed break/vacation from responding to this particular topic, at least with more personal, specific advice on such issues. This sluffing tends to run in cycles and is nothing a little time will not cure. In the mean time, you may have to help yourself by looking through the "treasure chest of past posts ", initially, and then post for additional help on anything you have questions on. Report what you have done to "check for" and tshoot this issue. This will keep redundant suggestions down to a minimum.

I just don't want you to think your being ignored for any personal reasons. Sometimes timing is everything. :)

I'm sure someone else can put up a link or I'll do it later if you can't find it but I'm a believer that if system resources suddenly drop, especially if the thing has ran well previously, I will run a memory check. Any time resources suddenly drop run Windows Memory Diagnostics. If no one else puts up the link before I come back here I will but right now I'm just going through in a hurry.

I was having this same problem with a Windows 98 system which I have recently dis-continued using. It seemed to me that the problem started with the installation of some of the Windows98 / Internet Explorer "fixes" and security upgrades. I never went back and tried un-installing any of them to see if this actually cured the problem, but they were the only "new software" installed around the time that the problem first developed.
