Hi All, I have 4 security cameras hooked up to a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) for security around my home.
All camera activations are recorded to my DVR box ready fro retrieval if needed & all woks well.

I also have the system set up so I can remote view the cameras from my laptop or my phone using port forwarding through Dynamic DNS.

My question is this, is there a standard way to backup the DVR remotely, so in the event of the original DVR box been damaged or stolen I would still have a exact backup copy at my remote location?

    Thanks in advance

    Whacker.

Me thinks we'd need to see the manual to the DVR.

I think you'd need something like an "auto backup" versus the remote backup. Meaning it would probably need to automatically backup to another device in another location or part of the house.

Yeah this unit is cheap & cheerful Steve and is a Chinese import for the European market , I've looked @ the manual and it's written in Chinglish if you get my meaning not very helpful.
Would a NAS unit possible work in this case? there is a usb 2 slot built into the DVR. Opps and of course a Ethernet RJ45 port.

If the DVR will allow you to copy out to either of the devices I'd guess you're good to go. You might have to do it manually.... But is there really anything from yesterday or last week that would be of any value? Or would you like a copy of the recording of the person stealing the DVR??

Food for thought: Since your viewing the cameras on a laptop - you should be able to record it on the laptop.

Yeah, that's it Steve, want to have a copy of all data, breaking, entering and I guess if I want a copy of them stealing the DVR too I'd need to add a 5th camera pointing to where the DVR box is stored.
I'd also need to dedicate a laptop for the backup recording. As you are probably guessing I'm figuring this out as I go along...
