in our other pc the dvd cd rom does not work correctly anymore after a repair shop replaced the hard drive and MB. The dvd/cdrom does not read new soft ware or copied images on a cd. However, it does play music cd's. I contacted the repair shop, but he want me to take it to him at additional cost. In the devise manager there is no warning icon.
    WindowsXP, asus MB 2.4 ghz.
Is there a way to check where the problem lies or would it be easier to replace the dvd-rom. The present unit is a LG GSA-H55N DVD+RW 20X8X16 DVD-RW 20X6X16 INT IDE 2MB OEM DVD Writer W/ SW

First thing to check is that the data (ribbon) cable is seated properly - at both ends.

Second uninstall the drive through Device Manager and reboot - if there is no warning in DM I doubt this will do anything.

Then blow out the drive - may be dislodged dust on the laser.

If you can couple up the drive to another PC and see if the issue remains.

If all this fails a new drive is peanuts these days :)

Thanks PeteC, I did check and the connections are good. Nothing shows up as an alert in the device manager. I tried again to install a program and a different picture cd, this time it did accept. So the next thing is for me to get a air spry can and try to clean out. I will post the result.

A lens cleaning disk with solution wont go amiss either. I'd also think twice about returning to that repair shop.

Thanks guys, the blast of air spray did the trick. All cd's and dvd's can now be read.
