I am posting the following for future reference for others in this situation.

I uninstalled Roxio Creator 9 and in doing so did something to both my DVD-RW and CD-RW drivers. Device Manager showed them with the yellow exclamation marks, saying- "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) ".

I uninstalled them and XP reinstalled them upon reboot but no change. I tried to use the Update Driver button in the Device Mgr Properties window but no drivers could be found.

I did a websearch and found the following article. In my case deleting both the Upper Filters and the Lower Filters keys, followed by uninstalling the drives via Device Mgr and a reboot, were needed to complete the fix.

    My cd drive wont work

I hope that someone besides myself finds this helpful. Thanks, of course, to the OP of the text that I quoted.
