Running a system with XP Pro and have 2 sata dvd burners. Over the weekend I burned 2 video projects and all was good. When I went to do a third program, I got a message that said "an error occurred ". I didn't list the error, but wouldn't write to the disc. Tried the other burner and got the same message. The original videos I did play fine on both of these burners. I popped a blank disc in and hit properties. It showed 0 space used, 0 free space, and 0 capacity. At this point, both will play, but neither will record. I also tried to record different type files.

Both discs show up in bios and device manager, and both are listed as working properly. I've tried replacing cables, unplugging and replugging, un-install and re-install, all to no avail. I find it hard to believe that both would have died at the same time.

I must be missing something. Any suggestions.

Did you try using Windows System Restore to roll Windows back to a point in time when your computer was functioning correctly? It allows you to undo system changes without affecting your personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos.

Since one of the dvd's was getting old, I picked up a new one and installed it this morning. It didn't change a thing. I tried the Microsoft Fix it. Mr Fix it says it fixed my problem, but it still doesn't work. Device manager says it's working too, but it's not. Doing some more Googling, I found that others have had this problem going back to 2011 and 2012. None of the posts resulted in the unit being fixed.

I don't need these burners right now so I'll take a deep breath and sleep on it for a while. If I don't figure it out in the next day or so, I'll mark it resolved. If I find the answer, I'll definitely post the results.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Did you try the System Restore as Doc. suggested? Have you tried running
sfc /scannow to check that all files are OK?
If the drives will play but don't burn - it points to software corruption/missing. Neil.

I did try the system restore. I did not do the sfc scanner. Will try that after breakfast.

Getting too old for this stuff. I ran sfc /scannow. It did ask for the original Windows disc. I took about 10 minutes total. When it was finished, I rebooted and checked the drives again. Both drives, checking properties read "0 space used, 0 free space, and 0 capacity ".

Just for the hell of it, I went back to my editing program and pulled up a short movie. I set it up to burn to disc. Perfect burn. Disc plays on this machine and others and also play in my stand alone player.

Will quit while I'm still ahead. Will do more playing when I have more time. Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I'll mark this resolved for now.
