Hello People I hope you are all well.

I have a NEC DvD RW Model ND-35000AG with latest firmwear loaded and it has served me well. I can't remember when I last played a commerical DvD in it as I normally use it for burning and installing programs, anyway I now find that any DvD I play (be it commerical or otherwise) plays S..L..O..W I have check the device manager and all seems well, not sure how to continue trubleshooting from here....any advise???

    Thanks in Advance.

Guess you've done the usual ....

Uninstall through Device Manager and reboot ?

Blown canned air up the slot to remove dust or used a cleaning disk?

Do CD's play OK? - use different laser.

What do you use to play DVD's ?

Tried an alternative player? - could be a buffering problem.

    Slow DvD Player

Hello Pete, apologies for the incorrect fourm post.

Yep have just completed all the fixes you suggested to no avail.

Uninstalled and rebooted - no change
Cleaned the DvD lens - no change
Audio CD's play fine - DvDs still S..L..O..W

I use windows media player ver.11 and Roxio cineplayer for playback of DvD's still playing slow, almost watchable, but not quite.

    Cheers

    Whacker.

If you can test it in another computer and get the same results I think it may be failing - on the DVD side as CD seems to be OK.

    I’d check 1 more thing.
You might have uninstalled / reinstalled the device and not the driver.

    Go to Device Manager.
    IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

Primary IDE channel or Secondary IDE Channel whichever your drive is connected to.
Don’t worry if don’t know – open each one then:

    Advanced Settings tab
Check that Transfer mode says - DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode is - Ultra DMA Mode * - (* being a number).

If Current Transfer Mode says Not Applicable then nothing is connected .
If current transfer Mode says - PIO * it’s an uh oh – that’s slow.
So then: Go to Driver tab – Uninstall

Your device will be found and mode reset when reboot.

Sometimes for strange and mysterious reasons the mode will get reset PIO

Hello ephemarial thanks for your input.

Theres one IDE channel on my motherboard which the DvD drive is connected to as master.

    Under Device Manager
    IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers

    Primary IDE Channel device 0
Divice Type: Auto Detection (Grayed out)
    Transfer Mode: PIO Only
    Currant Transfer mode:pIO Only

    Primary IDE Channel Device 1
    Device Type: Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode: DMA if Available
    Currant Transfer mode:Not Applicable

Secondary IDE Channel Device 0 & 1 as per Primary IDE Channel Device 1 above.

I did delete the drivers as suggested and they reinstalled when booted to the above defaults.
Is this telling you anything? caus Im not sure... Oh yeah DvD audio playback still slow.

Might be worth your while to re-install/update the chipset drivers for the mobo.

Yes - It’s telling us why the audio is slow.
    PIO transfer mode won’t work.

    Forgot to mention this part.
Did you change the transfer mode to: DMA if Available

If it won’t let you then try it after uninstalling the driver and before rebooting.

If did that and still comes up in PIO mode then 2 other things.
The cable or a bios setting.

Try the cable from the other machine.
Sometimes there’s a bios setting to enable DMA mode. But haven’t seen that for awhile.

    Hello Gents...

I have updated / reinstalled the chip set drivers - No Change
I can select "DMA if available" and after driver deletion & reboot it remains selected, but the Transfer Mode is still PIO ¦¬(
Noting in the Bios to allow enabling of DMA
I have changed the 40 pin IDE cable with a known working one - No change
I also changed the NEC DvD RW with a Samsung DvD Rom and the transfer is still PIO.
Is this giving you any more clues??

    Cheers

Between Pete’s suggestions and mine I’m out of ideas.
You might try searching for “Enabling DMA mode’ and see if anything else shows up.

Although a 40 wire cable will work with a DVD I’ve always used an 80 wire.
80 is recommended for DMA modes.

I have found the very helpful article about when DMA reverts to PIO @ http://winhlp.com/node/101 it didn't work for me but it did give me a great understanding of what is going on with the problem I have. Hope it helps...again when I get a fix I'll post it here.

    Cheers

Hello All, at last I got a fix for "when DMA reverts to PIO" it's not what I expected but a fix none the less...
I uninstalled Roxio 10 (DvD Burning Suite) and rebooted...this did not correct my problem....its when I re-installed Roxio 10, the primary IDE channel changed from PIO and reverted to Ultra DMA Mode 2...Why??? Not to sure!! at least now I can watch DvD's with out the shutter. Thanks everyone for there input.
Pint of Guinness for you all... ¦¬)

Darn...thought I had this one solved....it would appear that it was not the Roxio softwear suite that was turning on & off the DMA & PIO modes, because the problem is back.

What I have noticed is, that I have Windows 7 running on the same system on a seprate partition and when I boot into win7 all is well, DMA mode is active for the same DvD drive..
When XP is running it's back to PIO....I did post a link to a fairly detailed fix for this which involved registry tweeks and was sure this would cure my ills...but nope still got shuttering DvD playback. Any Ideas where to look next?

    Cheers

Persistence does pay off...I eventually got a fix for this problem & here it is.

I've had this problem before and i found that changing the ATA controller
driver from device manager has resolved it, If you right click your ATA
controller in device manager and select update drivers then select advanced
and don't search i will choose a driver to use. Normally there will be a
couple in the list if you try a different one the one currently in use and
    see if that works..

Thanks for the update - can't remember without trawling through the thread if a reload of the chipset drivers was suggested - that may have done the trick.
