    Athlon 600
    256 M RAM
    Gainward GeForce3 Ti/200
    CL 12x DVD drive
    CL Soundblaster Live! Value

    Win XP Home
    InterVideo & WinDVD playback software

For exactly one DVD that I can find (Men In Black Collector's Edition), there are two discrete spots during playback that will cause my system to hang. This problem has survived the replacement of the OS (98 -> XP), the video card (Banshee -> GF3), reinstallation of everything on a hew hard drive, and even (I think) the DVD drive (I can't remember anymore). All other DVDs that I own work fine (as far as I can recall). In addition, this DVD is pristine - no dirt or scratches, and it plays perfectly on a standalone dvd player and another laptop.

Does anyone have any idea of what's going on here? Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, playing movies on disk (DVD and VCD) on a computer isn't quite the same as playing them on a stand alone.

I have an extensive collection of DVDs and VCDs (from Asia). All play just fine on my stand alone. But a few give problems. Some don't like a particular playback software. Some don't like being played in a computer. Sometimes, a few will hang or otherwise not play (like w/o subtitles, etc) on a computer.

I've just resigned that sometimes it's not necessarily the computer as such. Too many variables in the cutting of the disks.

Yeah, I was afraid of that.

OK, thanks a lot for the reply--I guess I'll just resign myself to hitting "Next Chapter" at the right time - I guess I'm lucky that both freezes occur at the ends of chapters. :p

Also, it may be the software. I use WinDVD 2000. It seems to work best with my hardware. Power DVD 3.0 and 4.0 were constantly getting Alzheimer's in my computer.

Only one DVD won't play very well in it. It's a mainland China production.
