    I bought memorex 4.7 GB DVD-R's.

When I insert a disk into drive and go to the drive in "My Computer" and click "open" the message comes on "Please insert a disk into drive F. "

But when I put the DVD-R into my CD-RW drive I do not get that message. When I open the drive I get a blank screen. I assume this means that is the empty disk ready for data. My guess is that my DVD drive is a DVD-ROM drive only not a write drive.

Should I return these DVD-R's or just use them in my CD-RW drive?

    It's your call;)

Every DVD writable drive I've ever seen says it writable on the front....

since the specs for my Sony say my dvd drive is rom and my cd is rw, I guess I can keep the dvd-r's and write data to them only in the cd drive.

The GDR8160B is a CD-ROM/DVD-ROM combination drive. Because it is a "ROM" (Read-Only-Memory) drive, it does not have any write (burning) capabilities. It can read (not write) all of the following types of discs: CD-DA, CD-R/RW, CD-ROM, CD-ROM XA, DVD-Dual, DVD-R/RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, Mixed Mode, Photo CD and Video CD.

The CD-W524E can handle CDs, (not DVDs). It can both read and write (burn) CDs (only). It can handle the following types of CD discs: CD-DA, CD-I, CD-ROM (MODE 1), CD-ROM XA MODE 2 (FORM 1, FORM 2), CD-TEXT, CD Extra (CD Plus), Multi-Session Photo CDTM, Press CD, Recorded CD-R, Recorded CD-RW and Video CD.

In other words, neither drive has DVD burning capabilities. :( New ones are usually pretty cheap though. :)
