I'm considering installing a DVD Burner (Double Layer). For minimum requirements most of the burners say to have 10 to 20 GB free space.

I have a 40 GB HD but it's partitioned into 4 equal parts (with each having less than 10 GB free space). Does this REALLY make a difference?

P.S. If necessary, I have a CD/RW - DVD ROM drive installed which I can use to do "on the fly" burning.

    Hi Ace,

I just installed one and the software is installed on a 40 gig drive. Roxio much to my supprise takes up about 500 MBs.

Not clear on what and why the 20/40 gig free space, for what? The amount that you can put on a DL DVD is 8+ gigs, so presumably wouldn't need any more HD space than that for a burn.

I suspect it has to do with what your burning out - video eats up HD space.

    Regards - Charles

10 - 20 GB free space is precautionary:
    1. the dvd may at times use the temp dir when burning thus double the size of the actual file being burned (movies) may be required.
    2. double layer tech allows a standard dvd disk to hold about twice the data.

A double layer dvd will hold over 9 gig.
If you don't have the free space, plus some breathing room for the temp files, you're not going to be filling the disk.
20 gig (formatted NTFS) is minimum! I use 80 gig, and do 3 or 4 movies at once (encode/author) then burn.

anybody know any DVD burners that use less space as 20 GB could tax of newer computer and my older one has only 6 GB free (out of 10 GB drive)

Ace, you could rely on "on the fly ", but may run into cache problems. Always better to create an image file. You may want to invest in a "partition manager" so that you can rearrange the partition sizes.

Dave932932, rather than "squeezing ", you may need extra drive space.
Is your whole system up to the task? Would you be better off holding out till you get a new system?

    Dave932932 ,
The DVD burners by it self does not need that much space. It depends on the program you are using and how much video you have along with the file type you are using. As for doing video most programs say your older system would not meet the needs of doing video.

Sparrow, some system requirements are still too low:
Still more than Dave932932's (second) system can provide :(
