The drive icon for my DVD-RW drive has vanished. I have a Gateway with a double-density burner. I opened My Computer, and the drive letter is gone, while the others remain. I searched under Windows Explorer and couldn't find the drive letter.
The drive is visible in device manager with a red X across the icon. I tried to enable the drive, but that didn't work, either.
Next, I opened regedit and navigated to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and deleted the "upperfilters" and "lowerfilters" values, and rebooted, which still didn't work.
My next step might be popping the hood and checking the power cables, but I thought to try here first.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

    Hi, welcome to the BBS.

In Device Manager uninstall the drive, it will be automatically reinstalled when you reboot.

Still no luck, uninstall the drive again, shutdown and open the case, disconnect the cables to the drive. Boot into Windows, check there is no listing in Device Manager. Shutdown and reconnect the drive.

After that I might think it was a problem with the burning software, although you should try connecting it in another computer and see if appears alright there (reads disks).

It's 6:30 in the morning and Happy Thanksgiving.
I did what you advised and it worked. Thanks. It was touch and go for a moment. When I opened "My Computer" to see if the drive returned, the icon was there ... then if flickered on and off a couple of times. I wonder if I have a loose connection. I'll check that this morning.

    But thanks for your help.
