This is not directly a computer question but does relate to DVD recording. How much space does 2 hours of recording take on a DVD R or RW?

Depends on the compression / codec value of the movie.
Example, for music files in MP3 format a 3 minute song will always be 3 minutes .. but what was the bit rate of the recording .. 64, 128, 192 or higher) will have a direct impact of the file size. The file size could be 1MB to 10MB. The same (1) song in a "Wave" format could almost fill a CD .... yet still only provide 3 minutes of play. The easy solution ... the physical file size of the video file determines if it fits the storage medium. For a single layer DVD, you should have no problems if you keep your finished file about 4300MB.

Thanks for the rapid reply. I think my question was not specific enough.

I am going to replace my TV VCR with a combination DVD-VCR unit. The actual recording would be from the TV so I really have to know how much I can get on a DVD-RW recording a 2 hour program, for example

    Understood :D
But same rules apply. :p :p
You will need to look into the features of the recorder. It should provide information pertaining to recording directly from TV/Cable input. You would be looking for "record time" in minutes onto a standard DVD disk. Also check to make sure your combo unit can record on both VCR tape and DVD disks. If yes, further check for any type of "restricted" type recording.

Just caught that type of disk format ... definitely make sure if DVD combo can manage this type of "record /erase/ record/ erase" (with possible reformat in between. Never looked into combo units, but my guess if available, would be an upper-end unit.

    UPDATE
It would appear many of these units can use DVD RW (in record mode) disks.
Just a few to look at .. vcr dvd rw combo DVD/VCR Combos. Not sure any more, but Go-Video was a good in this area at one time.
