    Hi all,

    A friend brought me his computer for a "tune-up ". However, when I go to log into his account, I get a box that pops up saying "A duplicate name exists on the network ".

    I checked the User Accounts and there's just the two, as there should be.

    Any idea as to how to get rid of the annoying popup box?

    It says Network not users. Did they have this problem?

    @MrBill,
    Yes, that was one of the reasons he brought it to me — to get rid of it.

    @Pete,

    Thanks for the link. I'll check it out, but there's only two users on the machine.

    It has nothing to do with the number of users on the machine.

    Check the link Pete posted, or see this Microsoft article: "Duplicate Name Exists" Error Message When You Start a Windows XP Workstation

    If I can make it any clearer, if I understand the problem, the names of the computers appear to be the same, for example, both are named "Computer1 ".

    You can't have the same name for two computers on the same network.

    Check the "System Properties" on both (right-click on Computer and select Properties). Look it up in Help and Support (eg. search for "name ") and find out about naming the computer.

    It is the computer name that is the problem, not a user name.

    Hi all,

    Thanks for the links. He took the computer back and it probably won't be for another month or so until I get it back.

    Anyway, there's only one name in Sys Properties and there's only two users on the machine.
    I think it might be a ZoneAlarm thingy. We both have the same ISP, but different modems. I seem to remember (now) that ZA asked for access and I granted it. When I get it back, I'll check ZA and see if there's two of something in there.

    You keep saying the same thing while everyone is telling you that it has nothing to do with the error message you received :eek:

    Hello again jpChris,

    Computer is assigned or given a Name to identify it while, if or when it will be networked. Your problem appears to be 2 or more of these computers have the same name. It is very easy to rename/change.

    Please don't take the following link as an insult. I thought it would show you just how fast and easily this can be done and eliminated as a possible root cause. While it may not be your cure or fix, "it is" the most likely thing to focus on at the moment.
    Pictures may help:

    How ever, still feel free to verbally call both computers the "same" cuss word name this may make you feel better.

    Hi all,

    I apologize for the tardy reply, but, my e-mail was all munged up. I'd open and e-mail and the sender\address was correct, but the body copy was from a different sender. And every e-mail I'd open after that one would have the exact same body copy as the first one but the headers were correct, e.g., I'd get a reply from here with the correct Sender, Headers, etc., but the body copy was from the e-mail I'd opened before. :confused:

    Anyway, I had to come trolling through here to find responses.

    Thanks to all who replied, I appreciate it. However, when my buddy brings his 'puter back I'll change it.
