I searched the website for a remedy to my duplicate desktop icon problem and found a solution for XP users. What modifications do I need to put in the registry for Vista? Thanks.

Would generaly be best if you started that the begining and tell us what the problem is...

Guessing you found a solution that involved editing the registry for an XP machine?

Does the same reg entry exist in Vista?

Something must've gotten lost since my original post. I had a description posted plus I thought I had registered as an intermediate-user.
    Oh well--
    HP dv9000 notebook (32 bit)
    Home Vista Premium
When I save anything to the desktop (files, applications, shortcuts, etc), I get duplicate icons on the desktop.
I searched the internet and found a solution that entailed modifying the registry. However, the fix applied to the same problem someone had on on XP system so I wasn't sure if the XP solution could be applied to the Vista. I've never modified my notebook's registry.
The link for the solution I found: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/duplicatedesktop.htm.

The Vista notebook seems to use different terms:
the HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ User Shell Folders branch-- "Desktop" has the terms %SystemDrive%\Users\Public\Desktop -- I'm not sure I could/should use the XP fix for this one which recommends resetting this to %USERPROFILE%\Desktop

the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ User Shell Folders branch-- "Common Desktop" has the terms %PUBLIC%\Desktop--again, not sure I could/should use the XP fix for this, resetting to %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Desktop

Not sure where to go from as I don't normally mess with the registry.
    Thanks

In my Vista I have first setting:
exactly the same, in same location.

    ...but in second one:
I have Common Desktop value set to:
    %PUBLIC%\Desktop

OK--just to ensure I get this right:
For HKEY_CURRENT_USER reset Desktop from %SystemDrive%\Users\Public\Desktop to %USERPROFILE%\Desktop.

For HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE keep my Common Desktop value %PUBLIC%\Desktop (my current setting) and do not reset to %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Desktop. In other words, if I read your post correctly, I don't change the value for this entry since it's already set to %PUBLIC%\Desktop.

That's right. This is how I have it on my Vista.
I guess, we are back to square one, then.

I tried the solution and the duplicate icons are gone however, I have a few additional problems. Anything saved to desktop won't run (message says unable to locate). I have two folders in my owners directory called "Desktop" I don't recall having them prior. If I save a file to either of these folders, the icon appears on the real desktop but won't open.

I also noticed one other oddity. My "owners" directory is call "Ramos Family ". When I check the properties of any file in this directory, it comes up (for example) C:/users/test/(name of folder). We had this notebook repaired some time ago due to a bad mother board. Looks like "test" might be the same as "Ramos Family ". Not sure if this condition has anything to do my desktop problem. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    What solution?

There is really something odd going on there.
Please, post your HijackThis log here, and I'll take a look.

This is gonna be only a preview. If I see anything suspicious, you'll have to post your log in "Security" forum.

    I think this entry:
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Launcher] %WINDIR%\SMINST\launcher.exe
is a part of some spyware, but you may want to post your log in "Security" forum, just to make sure.
