    Hi,

As posted in another thread I'm getting BSODs from my soundcard driver. It's already at the latest version so I'm hoping there's more useful data in the dump log:

    Opened log file 'c:\debuglog.txt'

    KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (8e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
    happening.
    Arguments:
Arg1: c0000005, The exception code that was not handled
Arg2: ba1f3252, The address that the exception occurred at
    Arg3: b50aa898, Trap Frame
    Arg4: 00000000

It also might be helpful if you post two more dump logs for upcoming crashes (as they occur). They might help us identify a pattern (or lack of a pattern).

Also try to see if you can determine any patterns. For example, do your crashes occur only when performing certain tasks (such as playing a certain game)?

    ==========

One recommendation that is often made regarding BSOD crashes is to test the RAM.

In case you decide to test your RAM for errors, all of the following RAM testers have been recommended in this forum. However, opinions differ about which RAM tester is "best ".
If you discover an error with any of these RAM testers and the RAM tester does not identify which RAM module is defective, then re-run the test with only a single RAM module installed until you identify which module is defective. (I am not familiar with the exact information output of any of these RAM testers when they find errors.)

A More Reliable RAM Testing Method:
    1. Remove some of the memory modules from the computer (while the computer is off, of course).
      • For example, if two RAM modules are installed in your computer, remove one of the RAM modules.
    2. Start your computer and see if the problem goes away.
    3. If you continue to have unexpected reboots, then replace that RAM module with another module, or install the module in a different memory slot.
    4. Start your computer and see if the problem goes away.
Continue this process to see if you can pinpoint the cause of your problem to a specific RAM module or slot.

OK thanks for the responses. My hardware is as follows:

    Asus A8N mobo
    2GB Corsair Mushkin XP4000 RAM [2x1GB]
    AMD Athlon64 3500+ CPU
HDA [now Auzentech] X-Mystique soundcard [based on the C-Media 8768+ chip]
    BFG 7800GTX PCI-E graphics card
    Tagan 530W PSU

The crashes have only occurred like this when playing Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. I've been playing this for at least a year since it was released but it's only been crashing like this recently. I haven't tried other games recently but with our bank holiday weekend in the UK coming up I have some time to try some new games.

Next time I reboot I'll try Memtest86+ again but I use this PC for weeks between reboots and I have been stressing it quite a bit encoding audio CDs to FLAC with no other problems.

I have tried posting on the C-Media forums with no luck. I could try pushing a memory dump or two on their technical support but I'd be surprised if they accept them.

Anyway here's another DebugWiz analysis of a crash that happened 8 minutes before the one I posted above, again playing GTA:SA. To my un-trained eye it looks like the same error in CMUDA3.SYS:

    KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000008e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
    happening.

    cmuda3.sys is a sound driver.

Does the A8N have an onboard soundcard? If so, go into the BIOS/Startup settings and disable it since you are using an add-in card.

There are several versions of the A8N...A8N-SLI, A8N-VM CSM, A8N-E...which mobo do you have?

On-board sound is already off as are most of the on-board extras except the NIC. I have the A8N SLI-Premium but I'm not running in SLI. Have been running BIOS 1009 for over a year [I think, without a reboot I can't remember for sure].

Assuming you have your X-Mystique drivers handy to reverse the following:

Perhaps if you disable and/or remove the X-Mystique sound card in Device Manager, shut down, physically remove the sound card, and enable the on-board sound in the BIOS, then your BSODs will stop occurring. If so, then I think you have narrowed down the suspect to something involved with the X-Mystique card with certainty.

mattman (or any other hardware guru), does this seem reasonable to you?

In case you end up looking for BIOS and/or drivers for your mobo, search for A8N-SLI Premium in the "Download" section of the ASUS web site. NOTE: The location of the dash in the mobo model number is important. ;)

Can quickly locate the downloads available for your mobo by searching in the upper-left corner of the "Download" section as follows:
    • Input Model to Searc: A8N-SLI Premium
    • Category: All

Might want to download drivers ahead of time (while waiting for advice from a hardware expert) in case you need them. Gives you something to do until the Australians wake up anyway. ;)

It appears you already have the latest non-beta BIOS installed. I would not flash with a beta BIOS version without an expert's advice.

Now I am awake, I need to go to work :p.

One thing I would check carefully is that there is no software installed from the onboard sound/audio.

Look for the nVidia chipset drivers recommended at the Asus website.

I would then look at updating the drivers for the X-mystique card and maybe uninstalling and reinstalling the software (control panel) for it.

You have probably checked, but the BIOS may require that it is set to single graphics not SLI, do a check of the SLI settings.

There is no on-board audio software installed. I remember removing it nearly a year ago when I was having other BSODs. On that occasion it was Widcomm Bluetooth drivers causing it, fixed by uninstalling and upgrading Logitech SetPoint without using the Widcomm drivers. I have never used the on-board audio or its software since then.

BIOS is not set for SLI. I forget what the exact setting is called but I know it's off. I have considered on a few occasions putting the beta BIOS on here but have read about other problems on the Asus forums that I don't like the sound of. In the end I considered it safest to stick with 1009.

This afternoon I had a 2-hour session playing Trackmania United with no problems. Usually when I play GTA:SA it bombs within 15 minutes of starting. I think I'll uninstall and reinstall GTA just to make sure it's not a corruption problem with the game.

cmuda = C-Media driver. Both dumps indicate cmuda3.sys as the culprit. So I suggest you try a newer or older version of the X-Mystique software.

I also suggest older, because your version is from Thu Apr 26 10:33:44 2007

I was using the next oldest Auzentech driver when these BSODs started occurring. That was when I upgraded to the latest version, again from Auzentech. The ones on the C-Media website are nearly two years old, and the last time I used one of them it was terrible. Full of bugs and I struggled to get Dolby Digital Live working. As that was the main reason for me using it I abandoned C-Media's driver.

The version number difference between CMUDA3.SYS on the older and newest driver is minimal:

    Old 5.12.1.46
    New 5.12.1.47

I think the only thing added is 64-bit support and that's in a separate sub-folder of the driver. I would guess there are minimal other differences.

Anyway the BSODs occur in an almost identical manner with both versions. I will be reinstalling GTA:SA at some point to make sure it's not corrupted as I'm starting to suspect.

mailman...experts? We may all be experts in our own field. I may be classified as non-expert because I try to suggest solutions outside of my field ( "Have a go, ya mug" as we say over here.)

You, you investigate and provide possible solutions, you may be just as expert as any of the rest of us.

Expert may not be expert, it may be extrapolate on your previous experience (searching the web, anybody can do that...putting the information together to solve a problem...that's what I might see as a possible expert).

A lot of troubelshooting is previous experience, ask MS. "Do you wish to send the information? Send, Don't Send ".

mattross, have you investigated the software that Arie (and I) talked about?

It is important that you see the difference between the soundcard drivers and the software that controls the drivers.

Well I know this is likely to put a hex on my luck but I reinstalled GTA:SA and over the past three or four days I have been able to play without any BSODs. So it looks like the installation was corrupted after all.

If it does fail again I'll update this thread. Thanks for your help.

That's encouraging news, mattross. :) Thanks for your follow-up!

I cannot run GTA Vice City or Doom3 on my computer any more (and I've always had trouble with Doom3) so I think I might try reinstalling those some time. If I recall correctly, I don't get BSODS but it's been so long since I tried running them I could be wrong.
