Hello everyone. First of all thanks for the great instructions on how to read the dmp file and generate a log, I spent ages trying to figure that whole thing out.

I've got a self-built system with these specifications:
    Case: Kandalf LCS
    CPU: Intel Core2Extreme QX6800
    Ram: 4x1GB,KingstonHyperX KHX6400D2LL/1G
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 8800GTX x2 SLi (even though SLi doesn't appear to be working yet.)
    HD: 2x150GB Raptor10,000RPM
    Audio: CreativeSoundBlasterX-FI ExtremeAudio
    Motherboard: AsusXtremeStriker

I had problems with the system below, turned out to be 1)faulty motherboard 2)faulty ram. A perfect confluence of horror for me. I managed to get both changed with my supplier, and so far so good.

Unfortunately today, while watching a 720p HD movie, I got BSOD. I don't know if its relevant, but at the time I was trying to open up the volume icon to raise the volume.

I copied the dmp file info over. Please find it below, and I hope you guys can help. I spent all my cash on the system, and its given me nothing but bad news since day 1! Oh how i miss the days of the rip off pre-built systems! OS is Vista Ultimate 32 bit.

    KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000008e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
    happening.
    Arguments:
Arg1: c000008e, The exception code that was not handled
Arg2: 00403b19, The address that the exception occurred at

    cronus88 - Welcome to the Board :)

I am no expert in analysing dump data - few people are, but my observation is that P17.exe is the likely source of the BSOD. It is part of the Soundblaster driver. Googling a little suggestd that SB drivers are not the most stablr.

I am sure that you have onboard sound too. Disable the Soundblaster card and run on the onboard audio and see if that helps. At a later stage re-intall/update the Soundblaster drivers.

to be honest i haven't taken any action yet. Now that I've pinpointed the issue with this soundcard, i'm thinking of just going out and getting a good one thats compatible with windows vista.

can you suggest anything? Its a gaming system, so i'm looking for something good.

    thanks again.

I'm not into gaming at all - digital imaging is my interest, so I am unable to recommend a sound card.

However I would urge you to use the onboard sound (if available) as a trial to pinpoint the sound card as the culprit before you go spending more money :)
