Is it possible to use integrated (motherboard) sound and a PCI sound card?

    My intentions are:
    * be able to record from audio cassettes to the hard drive while using the computer to play MP3/AVI/whatever
    * have 2 line input devices connected without having to constantly reach back and swap cables

Yes, it is possible. In fact I've done it but just as an experiment. I didn't leave it that way and didn't really do anything with it. You will, I believe, have to tell the programs what card to use. You shouldn't have to change anything on the programs using the default card, just the ones using the second card.

Also, you may have to play around with what slot you put the sound card in. When I did it I was running an Epox motherboard and there were two slots I could not put a sound card in even if the on-board sound was disabled in bios. Would cause conflicts. So if you put in the card and dosen't work, don't give up before trying all the slots even if you have to rearange other cards.
