    Hi

I am buying a new rack mount Compaq server for my company. The motherboard can take dual processors and has one P4 2.26GHz cpu fitted. I asked the supplier to quote for a second processor and they came up with a PIII 1.4GHz which is surprisingly expensive (£500). So my question is in two parts

    1. Does the second processor on the same m/b need to be exactly the same as the first?

    2. Why do servers use PIII's and why are they more expensive than P4's?

    Thanks

The processors must match, which makes your second question moot.

To attempt an answer to your second question, even if the first makes it redundant...the PIII you've been quoted on is probably the 64 bit Xeon processor, quite a bit more expensive, and powerful, than a regular 32 bit PIII.
