I am not sure if this is an SP2 problem or not, but I only got it somewhere after installing SP2. Please note, this is a brand new WinXP install and the only thing on it when I added SP2 were drivers for my motherboard. I have not had any of (knock, knock) the other reported SP2 problems. The system is an Abit NF7,1GB RAM, Athlon 2800, an ATI 9700 Pro and 2 21" monitors. I have one set as primary monitor and "Extend my Windows desktop onto" the other one. I can restart, shutdown for 5 minutes and start it up and all is fine, but if I shutdown one evening and come back the next afternoon when I start it's back to one monitor and I have to activate the second monitor again. Time and date and BIOS settings are NOT reset when this happens and nothing that I can think of has changed hardware wise after my WinXP reinstallation. Any thoughts??

This sounds as if it might be temperature related - I suggest you power down the PC, physically remove the video card, clean the contacts carefully with a soft pencil eraser and reinstall. If this fails to cure the problem remove the card through Device Manager and reboot and let Windows find it again. Would be a good idea to remove all the ATI software/drivers after removing the card in DM before rebooting - check for an updated driver too. Check the monitor connections to the card.

Another thought - try switching your primary and secondary monitors and see if the problem persists.

I doubt this is SP 2 related - a visit to the ATI web site might resolve this question though.

BTW - I am running SP 2 with dual monitors on a Matrox G550 with no problems.

I'll try cleaning the card, but the set up is the same as it has always been, it did not start doing this until I reinstallled WinXP and all the drivers are up to date.

May just be coincidental that the problem arose following a reinstall of XP, but I would still remove/reinstall the drivers

Actually, you caused me to think. I might be the drivers themselves. The setup worked for a year without a hitch and now it doesn't. The only change has been SP2 and the video drivers updated to the newest available.
