    Hello,

    I was trying to setup a dual monitor display for my home PC and have encountered this problem;

    The secondary monitor is not detected or showing up when I go to; (right click)>screen resolution. Only one monitor shows up, I've tried detect nothing happens.

    On the monitor it says "no signal detected ".

    I am running Windows 7 Pro (64bit), Dual core AMD Athlon II 3Ghz, MoboAsus M4A79XTD Evo, NVidia GeForce 9600GT graphics card and 8GB RAM.

    My 1st monitor is contect to the graphics card via the DVI port with a DVI-VGA convertor. The 2nd is connected to the graphics card via the HDMI port with a VGA to HDMI 1.8m lead brand new for this purpose.

    The monitor works on its own (tried in different machine) I have even tried another spare monitor but still get the same problem.

    I have tried connecting and restarting to see if this would trigger the detection it doesn't. What it does is give me a black screen when I should have the the welcome screen for password login to widows. (I could see and move the mouse)
    Logged in desktop loaded up with no icons or start baronly had my wallpaper visible.
    I can see the mouse cursor and move it around, also can move it to the left as if it goes onto the other screen (the 2nd monitor still reports no signal).

    What I have tried;

    1. Updating the Geforce drivers got the latest ones.
    2. Different monitor for 2nd monitor roll.
    3. Restarting after connecting the monitor.
    4. Logging in to windows from welcome screen even though it was black?
    5. Made sure 2nd monitor is connected properly.
    6. I know the HDMI port work because I had it connected up to my 42" HDMI
    TV for a while. (room now changed about).
    7. Google.

    Please advise if I have missed something

    Thanks Doc

    I'm guessing here, but it looks like none of your monitors support HDMI.

    The images I found of nVidia 9600GT cards show 2 x DVI ports, no HDMI ??

    Thanks for the reply PeteC,

    My Geforce 9600GT has 1 x DVI port and 1 x HDMI port;

    Monitor 1 is connect like this;
    From the graphics card: DVI port> DVI to VGA connvertor> VGA lead> VGA port on monitor.

    Monitor 2 is connect like this;

    From the graphics card: HDMI port> HDMI to VGA lead> VGA port on monitor.

    On google images there are some cards that have HDMI, SVideo, and DVI ports;
    others have two DVI ports,
    and yet again others have HDMI, DVI and VGA;

    The year of purchase was 2009 I am unsure of the exact version but will look for the box, I do remember that the HDMI didn't support sound when I had it connect to my TV (had picture and no sound) I just ran the sound from my PC speakers.

    cheers doc

    OK - I did not spend much time searching for images.
    Is this a lead with just HDMI and VGA at each end similar to this .....

    Maybe that's the answer and you need something like this ....

    I would be inclined to seek advice from your local computer store - it's outside my field of experience. Only used HDMI to connect my laptop to a digital projector with HDMI input socket.

    Yes the first image is like the one I bought.

    The second image (item) solves the no signal problem in my book, will need to get cable to confirm it though.

    Thanks doc

    My "guess" is Windows is confused as which monitor is the primary. I recommend the use of a multi-monitor utility. Even the latest operating systems sometimes have little issues, and seem to get confused occasionally as to which monitor is primary and which is secondary. So a multi-monitor utility is almost a necessity. My favorite is UltraMon "“ not free, but worth it. Others I trust have suggested the free DisplayFusion, but I have no personal experience with it.
