Does the install of Vista give an option to partition a single hard drive like XP does? So one could install on one hard drive but a different partition and dual boot.

I would suggest that you create the partition for Vista before you start the install Denstoe, using something like Partition Magic. Thats the way did it, and there were no problems at all. Vista may report the prepared partition with a different letter though if you have several partitions.

Why should I use a third party partitioning software? Is there a problem with the the install option?

If you install Vista on a blank/empty hard drive you can create partitions just like you can in XP.

Just like XP you can't create partitions on a drive with an existing OS and keep the existing OS.

Maybe I haven't been clear. If I have an 80gig hard drive with one partition and the OS on that partition but say 50gigs of free space. Don't I have the option of creating a new partition out of some of that free space? Then installing the beta on that new partition. I'm pretty sure I've done that before.

    Hi Dennis,

I don't think you did that with the OS disc :) without wiping the contents of the partition.

XP reports the raw size, then asks if you want to create a partition, if smaller than the raw size, asks if you want to create another partition. That process wipes out whatever content you had.

Steve writes that Vista acts the same.

Your choice is to use a 3rd party app such as PM.

    Regards - Charles

XP and Vista act the same way.

If your 50gigs of free space is already a partition then you're good to go.

Or you can delete the partition either in XP or during the Vista install and then create a new smaller partition.

There is no need for a third party application;)

The way I'm reading If I have an 80gig hard drive with one partition and the OS on that partition but say 50gigs of free space is a partition of 80 GB with 50 GB of free space within that partition.
