My DSL download speed varies from 1180 to as low as 38. The slow speeds seem to occur at peak use times, 1730-hours. I have a home network w/ Router.
My ISP is working w/ me, an open case, has switched my Server, and suggests I Tweak my Xp computer using instructions at DSL.Reports.
    Good Idea? Cautions?

It is only important to be able to get back where you started.

You will find this useful for tracking changes and their effects (21-day trial of iSpeed) and it backs up your original settings the first time it runs:

More programs, tweaks, suggestions at www.speedguide.net
Notice that each registry tweak has an undo tweak matched with it for download.

Sometimes these settings can make a lot of difference.

    Hope I did right!?

I downloaded DRTCP021, changed TRWin to 32767 and MTU to 1500. Will read other suggestions.
    Thanks, Wally

    MTU setting in computer/Router?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I downloaded Dr. TCP after running the Tweak Tester at DSL Reports and the Anaylizer at Speed Guide and set MTU to 1454 (Read someplace that a blank in this area was actually 1500 w/ Win. XP? That was initial reading) and the Tcp R Win to 37576. Seems to have improved, at least made more or less constant, my Download speed 1150-1250, was at times less than 100.
I tried 1492 but that seemed to slow speed. Setting T R Win higher also seemed to slow.
I may have lucked out, with help from here, and found the nearly correct setting.
Both Tweak Tester and Analyser indicate MTU is 1382?(Dr.tcp says 1454) but I did eliminate all cautions there, have all smiles?
I may attempt the Ping and use the formula-worthwhile?
    Suggestions?
    MTU in DrTCP is 1454
    In Linksys Router is 1382
Should they be the same? Which figure?
