I'm including my friend's entire message to me so you can see what his problem is first hand. Any suggestions other than looking for a program/driver update for his dsl or turning off the firewall would help loads! I'm at a loss!

"I finally bought a laptop to take to the mountain. I have gotten it to recognize the DSL link here at Home by Ethernet LAN and USB to the Internet.

It can finally recognize the USB DSL connection via the same modem as the LAN.

It can also connect to Internet Explorer and Browse the net via Google and Yahoo.

BUT, It Cannot Recognize or connect to Outlook Express or the New Windows Outlook Program, no matter what I or my ISP do to the accounts and connections.

It goes to a "Looking for Dial-Up" even if "Never Use Dial-Up" is checked.??

Broadband Connection, LAN Connection, doesn't matter for Outlook Express.

I can access Mail via Yahoo and probably Google, but not the normal Outlook Exp.

The Outlook connections all work on the Desk Top, using XP Pro, via the same DSL Modem on LAN. "

    Thanks in advance, Brenda

    Hi Brenda J

Sorry to have seen your situation went unanswered...Since then you probably have had the problem corrected but by chance it's still lingering, I want to offer a suggestion...Not always is a fix possible on the first attempt but wanted to try anyways...From my experience, there's a remote possibility what's known as a "Dialer" has possibly entered into your computer and until it's removed, your situation may persist...Do you know what and if any virus / spyware scans were done ??? That info will be helpful in ruling it in or out.

Please keep us posted even if the problem has been corrected...

Thanks for replying. The laptop was brand new so I doubt it was a virus or spyware. Nothing seemed to work so he packed it up and returned it. The last I heard he was looking for one with Win XP instead. Thanks again though, Brenda
