    DELL optiplex gx110, P3 733mhz. win2k pro. 512 RAM. radeon 7000.

Windows cannot start. BIOS says that all drives( 2 hard drives and 2 CD drives are unknown ). Also, a couple of sounds were heard from inside the box. I don't think that all the drives are bad, though; since they worked well just a few days ago.

    Unknown drives

OK. Here are some more informations:

During boot up, the computer emitted a series of double beeps with long silent invertals between them( may be a few minutes or more ). After the Dell splashscreen, I got a black screen with the following line of words:

"strike F1 to retry, F2 to setup "

F1 repeated the same line, F2 led to BIOS setup.

The pattern of the double beeps is confusing; I suppose that it's the warning code from the bios. I will make a dell diagnostics floppy(s).

Sounds like a least your primary hard disk has died, in which case Windows would be unable to start.

Getting diagnostic tools to check the drive is the 1st step.

    re: unknown hard drive

I think you're right. The boot drive is really bad. Is there anyway I can retrieve some data in that drive? I tried to connect it as slave to a good boot drive but it didn't work: both drives became undetected.
