    Hello,
My friend's house was hit by lightning and many of his electrical appliances were affected. They have replaced the TV, and his new Dell computer had several parts replaced, is still not working, so Dell is sending him a replacement computer because this was under warranty.

His problem is that he has an old Gateway computer, running Windows 98, and he is not able to get on the internet due to a modem problem. I have this computer hooked up at my house now trying to figure out what is wrong with his modem. He did have it at a shop but obviously they didn't do anything.

I removed the modem and tried to reinstall it and I keep getting this message,
"Please insert the disk labeled "Generic SoftK56 Modem Installation Disk ".
I just hit OK because I don't have the disk and I get this message: "The file VCRSTx.cat cannot be found.

He doesn't have any disks for this modem. Does anyone know where I can get drivers for this modem running Windows 98.

I'm still not convinced that the modem is not toasted from the storms that hit the house but I thought I would try getting the drivers first.

Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

    Jean

    Hello Jean,

The way I would find the correct drivers is to look at the card and see what name is on the main "chip ". You will then be able to find the drivers at the DriverGuide website.

    Hi,
Thank you for trying to help me. I think I have given up ever getting this to work. I did check the main chip and found the information and downloaded it from the driver site.

I also went and bought a new modem, it is a PCI Bus V.92/56 Kbps. When I put the card in, the computer didn't even recognize there was a new modem so I wasn't even able to load the drivers from the CD that came with the new modem card.

I put the original Modem Card back in, and tried again to install what I downloaded: "Conexant HSFi - cx11252-11 Conexant - Modems HSF_Win98SE.zip

    No luck.

I'm just going to forget the whole thing. Maybe something else went out with the lightning strike.

Thanks for all your help anyway.

    Jean

You may be right Jean, there may be actual damage there somewhere, although it should effect other PCI cards if there is.

If you haven't given up completely:
Remove all drivers...Control Panel > Modems; Hardware Manager; Add/Remove Programs.

Physically remove the modem/s, reboot and install the drivers without them. Hopefully, when you connect the modem and reboot, Plug and Play will identify and install the modem.

You could try the "modem wizard ". Go to Control Panel > Modems and click on the "Add" button. (This has never worked for me though :D )

Run the Add New Hardware wizard in Control Panel.

There are two types of modem, HSF is one, the other is HCF, you may want to try those.

You do not have much to work with, knowing only that it is a "generic" modem.

The new modem should be OK. Maybe it won't install because of the old drivers that are still around. Try to get rid of all the old drivers before installing new ones.

    Matt,

I did what you suggested and removed all drivers and removed the modem itself. Nothing seemed to work.

Thank you so much for trying to help me. I just don't know why either of the modems do not work, that is why I do believe it is something else causing the problem.

I'll put this one to rest and give up.

    Thanks again.

I understand your frustration Jean, I have had many "knockdown, dragout" battles with them myself.
    Give yourself a break.
If you feel inspired, have a look in Device Manager in Safe Mode. See if there are any listings for modems or modem hardware or even long lists of the same hardware (this would mean that Windows is having trouble installing the drivers and probably that the wrong drivers have been installed).

It is hard working a computer that you have not set up yourself. There may be a whole lot of "bugs" buzzing around in the background.

Thanks Matt for your additional help but I returned the computer to my friend and told him that I couldn't get the modem working. He may take it to a professional shop to see if they can make it work.

Thanks for taking your time to write.

    Jean

P.S. I worked on it for 3 days so I gave it my best shot. I'm just not that technical minded.

I am really tenacious and try as hard as I can to defeat the "problem ". It is sometimes very time consuming.
I think you have done really well! It may have been a problem with the hardware itself.

If you can walk away and think that it was an "educational" experience, then it was well worth it, in my opinion.

    To our future success...cheers :)
