I uninstalled Drive Image 7 because massive hard drive letter changes (just trying to unscramble drive letters that got scrambled as I was recovering from a bad crash.) caused it to fail to run. I figured file reference wrong somewhere.

After uninstall, tried to re-install using freshly unzipped downloaded file. It won't install, during install shield setup run, I get an error message in a separate little window:

    ____________________________________________________

    "Severe" (on title bar)

    "RTC File Error "

    ____________________________________________________

Powerquest's site lists thousands of error messages, this is not one of them.

Can anyone give me a clue?

Hey BreezyCricket, thanks for the comeback on this, I had given up on getting a reply.

Two drives. actually had 3 HDD, but one failed, in warranty, back to mfg, waiting return.

In the meantime, I had contacted Powerquest support, they tell me "got no fix" offered a refund! Not ready for that, yet.

Tried to install in safe mode, no go, but different error message:

Error "1607 ", don't remember exact wording, but, close would be

"unable to start Install Shield Scripting Runtime" or "unable to run
    Install Shield Sripting Runtime "

Have been searching MS KB, so far, nothing even close, but more searching, still at it.

DI 7 seems to be the only install program affected. No other install has generated error. Yet.

Also note, DI 7 requires MS .Net services to be installed on machine. Prior DI 7 install linked to MS for dnld of same.

I was trying to find same w/o DI 7 link, MS .Net site too confusing, was going to try re-install of .Net, so many links at MS site, too cautious to dnld 'cause I don't understand.

I'd really like to solve this one and show Powerquest. Maybe we can get paid for fix.

My last post got me to thinking, since DI7 is only program install fail, only program using .Net on this machine, I'm going to uninstall . Net and try reinstal of DI7. Will post results.

Hi Breezycricket: Great find, bookmarked. Unfortunately none of the fixes solved the problem. Well, actually, I wasn't able to follow all of the fixes.

Part of the instructions are to delete the folder:

    C:\Windows\installer.

No such folder on this machine. Is this missing file the culprit? I don't know how it could be, as I have re-installed XP recently and the install program won't run under new install.

I was able to follow all of the other instructions to the letter with the exception of deleting that folder, all to no avail.

One thing I noticed, after closing the error message (RTC File error), then closing the install program, another little window flashes by, really too fast to read all, but I get this much:

    Install Shield
    DEMO SHIELD

Stylized, Like a logo or splash screen. There's other stuff on it, but like I said, too fast.

I'm going to keep researching, I really appreciate your help and that is a great site you linked me to, talk about step by step. Boy, even an idiot like me can follow. (I think)

Not left yet, still wrestling Windows. On the Install Shield site there is a file to re-install and/or upgrade the installer. Guess what now? Warning message:

"The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation. "

Well, to put it bluntly, I am the system administrator and I have not set any such policies you stupid machine!!!

From other helps on the Install Shield site, it seems that these policies are set in the C:Windows\installer folder, a non existant file on this computer.

And just to add insult to injury, the install program asks if I want to overwrite the existing files!!!

    Just another dead end.

    :(
