I have asked this question before, but still have questions.

I don't want to partition or buy 3rd party software.

If I drag My Documents from Documents and Settings to the C:// drive, My Documents will still be listed under the Desktop at the top of the tree.

How do I avoid this duplication?

    Thanks, Judy

You see, the problem is that XP is setup to allow multiple users and as such each has their own my documents folder located in their documents and settings folder.

You can edit it by right click on the my documents folder on your desktop, and choose properties.
Under target location , choose move and change to the new location you want to have it at.

Thanks, Pete. That does shorten the name for search purposes.

However, there are still duplicate My Document folders in Windows Explorer. The one just under the desktop in the tree and the new one I just created by moving to the new location

Judy--I think you will find six to eight My Documents folders on your WinXP PC.
But rather than worry about that, what is it you want to do? If it is to have a shortcut to access My Documents folder (which contains your personal files), then right click on the folder in C:\|Create Shortcut. That will create a shortcut in the C:\ folder. Now move it whereever you want it.

    This will move the My Documents folder out of Docs and Settings;

First, put things back to default.

Click Start and right click My Documents, selecting properties. Click 'Move' and navigate to where you want it, then click 'Apply'. Answer 'Yes to All' when promted about moving any files. This can be undone by selecting 'Restore Default', which will be a new properties option when the move is complete.

Just for clarification, are you wanting to move 'My Documents' down in the Windows Explorer tree? Remove it from the tree so that it's only visible when you expand the tree to reveal it? If this is the case, moving the My Documents folder will not acheive your goal.

According to WelshJim, I should not be concerned about having more than 1 My Documents listed in Windows Explorer. It just seems in-efficient, but if there were more than 1 end user, I can understand why the duplication.

I will not worry about the duplications.

Thanks to all who helped me move by going to properties & target, etc.

Someone asked why I wanted to move my documents-- this is why:
I wanted the short name of my folders to show up when searching instead of the long doc&set/myname/foldername.
In the results of the search box the end folder name is not visible using the long doc & set name. That is why I wanted to move the folders out of doc & set. Now all I see is the short folder names & it works fine.
