Downloads go to TEMP dir first?

I notice that when I download from Internet Explorer the downloaded file FIRST goes into a temp directory on the same drive as my windows operating system INSTEAD of straight to the logical drive I specify when downloading, then gets moved over once completely downloaded. It never seemed to do that a while back?

This is a problem if I am downloading huge files which can't fit on that drive.
What is it that causes this to happen AND how can I disable or change that?

Is this set in Internet Explorer or Win98 somewhere (i.e. to use a temp directory initially)? Is it my virus checker program (AVG)? If so. in either case I can't find anywhere to change the temp drive to download to or how to disable this function.

    Thx for any insight.

    Hi mikenowo!

I have installed SP1 on two XP machines, one with much space on C:, the other with little space on C:.
On the former machine it created its temp directory on C: but on the latter on D: which had gigs to spare.

Maybe but only maybe ...... ...... is Windows smarter than we give it credit for.

Are you saying that IE sets up its own temp directory for downloading files? If so, can I change that anywhere? I don't seem to remember it downloading to a temp directory ever before though. It used to download right to the directory I specified in the download window.

Before downloading right click on the download link and you can then specify by using the Save Target As option where you want the downloaded file to be saved

Yeah, I DO that but it still saves it in a temp directory on my Windows OS drive internet temp directory first until it has completed the download, then moves it over after. I was sure that I had it downloading directly to where I wanted before, but I'm being told that it always downloads to temp first... I'm still not convinced that should be happening <sigh>, but unless I completely change where the internet temp directory is located (in the GENERAL tab under Internet Optiions in IE) I can't see another way around it. Don't really want to reposition the temo dir, just want to be able to download EXACTLY where I want right from the start. Windows is so annoying... always defaulting to what IT wants <grumble>

The behaviour I told about happened when installing SP1 from a CD to which the downloaded program had been burnt.

I have studied and made quite a few empirical tests to get to grips with WinME, which is similar to Win98.
In the registry there are a whole bunch of entries which specify different download locations for different types of downloads, not only for Windows but also for installed Applications.
If You want to have full control over all downloads, I´m sure You´ll have Your spare time reset to zero.

    WinXP would make Your day!
It has the same bunch of download locations but times the number of users plus common, all users, default user ......
I have noticed though that on a single user PC, with only one user account enabled, guest account disabled, the other ones aren´t used. If they are, the folders are cleared when done.

I´ve had the same thought as You have and wanted to move all "temp" folders to a separate "trash" partition but when I had learnt a bit I gave up the whole idea. I´m inclined to believe that the OS, especially WinXP, wouldn´t agree to much with my ideas.

Apart from the OS probably not agreeing, even if it would work, would it be worth while?
Supported by the responses to my questions on this board, my conclusion is no!

On this here Ancient and antiquated very controlable Win98SE machine downloaded files ( other than .ZIP files) go where I tell them too.

I downloaded and 80meg Golf file last night and it went directly to a sub folder of the game folder where it belongs.

When I select download and select SAVE a windows comes up giving me a chance to select where I wish it to go.

.ZIP files do go to Temp Int Files first and then they are transfered by Winzip to where ever I have Winzip set to put them. I have a special folder for them on H:

Downloads such as IE and software usually go directly to a folder bearing a reference to the software. For example IE5, IE6, IE6SP1 etc. These folders are created before I go get the download. If the folder has not been created then they go to H:\tmpfldr and get moved later.

If this can be done in XP or not I do not know.

You may be 100% correct. ME and XP do have a mind of their own. That is why I am sticking with 98SE as long as I can. It does all I want it to. Very capable of doing more. But most of all I as the user have very good ( and easy ) control of what goes where.

But one thing for sure. On my machines downloaded files NEVER stay on C: Right now I have a whole bunch of ( and going for more ) downloaded XP drivers etc. stored on the H: partition.

    Hi BillyBob!

I´ve never experienced that a zip-file goes to the TIF folder. If it really does, I´ve not noticed it before WinZip nicks it.
How would that work if someone has limited the size of the TIF folder to say just one MB and the zip-file is larger?

I do all my downloading to a separate folder on D:, everything including zip-files, I believed.
When updates have been installed, they go to a backup folder on E: and all other downloaded files are moved to the appropriate location or sent to the bin.

I´ve never experienced that a zip-file goes to the TIF folder. If it really does, I´ve not noticed it before WinZip nicks it.

The only way I found it out was when I was download a .ZIP file and did not get it all due to a power drop out. When I did go looking for it it was in the TIF files. And I had to clear the TIF folders before I could get it again.

And on larger files I have seen a message about Winzip moving a file to H:\ZipDnlds ( this was on a slower machine ) But on this machine it goes so fast that half ( or more ) of the time I have no idea what is happening. I just have to go check to make sure it wound up where is was supposed to. 98% if the time it does. the other 2% creates a pain in the part of my body that I sit on.

How would that work if someone has limited the size of the TIF folder to say just one MB and the zip-file is larger?

Don't have any idea on that. I have never even given it a thought. And I have never had a problem even with 50K to 80K Golf files that used to be .ZIP files but as of last evening I see they are now coming through as .EXE files.

But, the subject being discussed is the same as usual. It may well depend on the individual machine. The OS and setup of same. And most of all the USER of same. We may all have the same BASIC OS. ( The CD says 98, 98SE or XP ) But that may very well be all that is the same.

You can move your TIF folder to any location you want. Tools>Internet Options>General Tab>TIF>Move Folder. So if your C: is loaded you can relieve that situation this way.

If you get Tweakui, you can also move other folders off your C:. For instance My Documents, Favorites, etc..

I know if your TIF file is full, you may have probs doing windows updates until the TIF folder is empty.
